Hello and welcome to All Things Travel. This December, Julie's going on her very first cruise. Woohoo! Yay, Julie! Even better, it's a Disney cruise. I've traveled on several cruise lines before, as you may have remembered from past episodes, so today we're gonna walk through planning with a few questions about how to get ready for your first time cruise.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

I am really excited for my first

Ryan:

You should be!

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

We had a cruise booked way back in May of 2020. It was cancelled We've rescheduled a few times and then we just decided just to wait a little bit longer So now my youngest is six months So we are cleared to cruise. If you didn't know, your infants have to be over six months old in order to cruise. So just recently, this is a little bit unique to Disney Cruise Line, but our booking window opened for excursions. So that means we are getting close to our cruise. We're so excited because it's a land and sea vacation, which means we're doing a couple days at Walt Disney World and then we will head off on the cruise for a couple days. And I have to admit I have advised many, many of my clients leading up to their first Disney cruise, but it is very different doing it for myself. So I'm really excited to have this conversation with Ryan about, what we should be looking for, what we should be doing and some of our planning questions.

Ryan:

Today I'm just gonna be answering some of Julie's questions, which are probably also your questions if you're going on your first cruise. The first thing I want to say... Julie alluded to this, is her excursions opened up. Disney Cruise Line handles things the same way that they do at the parks, which is they stress everybody out, and they have these opening times. You have to get right on, right then, or you'll miss out. And, unfortunately, for some stuff, that is true on Disney Cruise Line, just like it is at the parks. Not as bad, but it feels like it. But other cruise line. I'm just wanted to say up front other cruise lines That may not apply.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

Correct.

Ryan:

You want to plan a cruise to an amazing destination, but you don't know how to get started as your travel advisors We work with you to create a customized itinerary for your vacation and take the So you can focus on the fun and creating those memories You can reach me at Ryan at CreatingMagicVacations. com

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

And you can reach me at julie at creatingmagicvacations.

Ryan:

Alright, Julie, so as we get started here, just kind of take us through why you chose the cruise you did. I mean, obviously you said it changed, throughout the planning process, but what is it about the cruise that you chose that made that your first cruise?

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

So, we are the most excited for a couple reasons. First, because we are going on the Disney Wish, which is the newest of the ships that you can currently sail on. And there is just supposed to be so much to do. The dining is supposed to be... Very interactive and I'm just really excited about that for my kids. I think they'll just really love it the second part is that it's a very maritime cruise. Even though, you know, I've never been on a cruise before, so then the next time I go, it might be weird that this was Christmas and then that one's not, but I love all things Christmas. I love all things Disney and I really love things Disney Christmas.

Ryan:

The one thing I will say about the Very Merry Time, that's the only themed one I've been on. I know Disney does others, and other cruise lines do others, it's there when you want it, but it's not when you don't. I mean, you're going to hear Christmas music throughout. I mean, stuff like that. It's not like christmas is all over the place. There's just some main areas I mean, you'll have this beautiful huge tree in the atrium some of the activities like we did gingerbread house decorating or gingerbread cookie Decorating but it's not there if you don't need it to be there You're still going to feel like you're going on a bohemian cruise

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

Got it. Okay. So that's the other thing. We knew that we wanted a shorter cruise since it is our first one I was looking for a four night cruise

Ryan:

And I think that's good. I think the four night cruise is great a three night Is too short that our first cruise was a three night i've been on three night four night seven night and ten night cruises and The three night cruise was way too short. It just even those of us that didn't like cruising as much Felt like it was too short.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

it almost would make me feel like disorienting like you just got on and then you're getting off

Ryan:

Yeah a four night cruise felt really good i'm glad that you chose that for your first one

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

yes and and for me with having little children, you're out at sea yes, you're docked a couple times, but Somebody happens to get sick, you know You just kind of go through the thought process of thinking about some of those things when you have little ones Like I said, my youngest just turned six months old today. She'll be closer to nine months on the cruise But still, I wouldn't want to have them away for too

Ryan:

Yeah,

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

so that's how we ended up On the itinerary that we're on it's a four night bohemian cruise on the disney wish and I can't wait

Ryan:

very cool

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

All right So ryan when you guys were planning your disney cruise or any of your other ones What kind of things did you think about maybe a little bit differently than what I

Ryan:

you kind of think about ultimately where you want to cruise and obviously the caribbean comes up Now for a disney cruise for a lot of folks just like what you said with the wish that's the destination, right? So you're basically going to go wherever the wish is And i've had clients who i've had clients do the same the kids want to go on the ship that they see the slide on, on the commercials. They book it based on that. And that's fine. But then you're basically going wherever that ship is. The other thing to think about is, how can you get there? So do you want to fly into Orlando and go to Port Canaveral? Do you want to go to Miami? Do you want to go to Fort Lauderdale? Or, do you live in Texas where you can go to Galveston? Or up by you where you can go out of Baltimore? What you thought is what most people do for their first Disney cruise. I want to go on a Disney cruise. You know when, when you kind of get cruising in your blood, you kind of. Extend yourself a little bit. Well, what is the western caribbean like what is the eastern caribbean like, how many days do I have at sea? Those factors kind of play into it a little more as you get more seasoned if you will

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

Right. And, and if, if you're very unfamiliar with cruising, when you start to look into it, you will start to learn that there are certain ships that are always docked at certain ports. There are certain ships that are always doing the same itineraries. With, with every cruise line, they kind of have that pattern. And once you start to learn that, You kind of start to dwindle down your process of how to pick where you want to

Ryan:

Yeah, absolutely

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

We mentioned this earlier, I just went through my booking window for excursions and on board activities, and I, surprised but also not surprised about the way Disney does this. So, it opens up at midnight at, I guess, is it a certain amount of days or did they just tell you?

Ryan:

It is a certain amount of days, but it also depends on your Castaway Club level. Castaway Club level with Disney is your loyalty. So after Julie's family sails on this... Then they will be silver then the next step is gold and, and whatnot. Based on your level of loyalty, you can do your excursions on a certain day.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

I was not very stressed about this at all. For one, I have little kids, so I really wasn't planning on doing a lot of excursions cause they can't really do them. They're too young. Second, like you mentioned earlier with Disney, a lot of times the ship is the destination. So I really just know that I want to explore the wish. I'm not too concerned about getting off or having something booked.

Ryan:

I think even if you're at a place where there's the activities that you want to do, like a Disney ship, people stress too much about this. They really do. There's enough stuff. I mean, there's enough free pop up activities. There's enough pool. There's enough kids activities. There's enough adult spaces. You're gonna be able to do what you want to do without filling your time. With all of these activities now, if you have a type of excursion you really want to do, or you have something on the ship that tends to fill up, like a Bippity Boppity Boutique, even though it really doesn't fill up or a drink class, which those do fill up, you do need to be on top of it, but don't stress about it. Again, other cruise lines, basically, I could book a Royal Caribbean cruise right now. Or a celebrity cruise and in 30 seconds after getting my reservation, I could get on and book all this stuff unfortunately Disney just kind of sets us up like they do in other areas that you have to do it At this time or you're going to lose out. So speaking of that then julie, how was that excursion? Booking process and did you choose anything that you wanted to do?

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

there were very few things I was looking for I was more so just excited to see what was available. Even if I wasn't gonna be booking it I just wanted to know what was there. So our stops are the Bahamas and Castaway Cay I'm not planning on getting off the ship in Nassau just For the sake of, my kids are so young, if I did get off, I would go to Bahamar or Atlantis and go to their water parks. And I think maybe the next cruise we would do

Ryan:

I agree with you and they're not going to notice the difference to them It's just a fun day on a disney ship

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

Yeah. And I'm also going to use that time to do some stuff that I want to do. So I did get a rainforest

Ryan:

Oh, very good for you. Good for you.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

One for my husband. I have obviously never experienced the rainforest room, but it sounds like it's right up my alley. So from what I understand, it's It's within the spa, but you're not having a specific spa session. It's more access to

Ryan:

It, it is. If you've been to a spa where you've had kind of those pre or post spaces where there's, pools or showers or places to relax, it's that. and I love the fact of getting the pass for the length of your cruise because then you can just go enjoy whenever you want, especially with your kids. Being at the kids club or at the nursery, that's your dedicated time to go relax. And they've got those heated loungers and the different showers and all that stuff where you can just chill. I think that's the perfect thing to book for yourself. How much were those? If you don't mind me asking

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

was going to say that was something that we splurged on. I don't remember the exact price because you. You don't pay for it right

Ryan:

Oh, gotcha.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

like add it to

Ryan:

Gotcha. Yep.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

and you pay for it when you get off the ship but I wanted it was a little over 200 a person,

Ryan:

Okay.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

I think, but again, you have to remember put yourself in my shoes. I have three little humans following me around every

Ryan:

You're like, dang it. mama's going to get the, get the money out of that rain forest. Pass.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

I am really looking forward to that. I love going and doing things like that. I'm really excited. And then I was kind enough to also get one for my

Ryan:

Very nice. Good for

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

and maybe he'll have time to use it. So one of the questions that I have for you, Ryan, is I noticed that when I had my other cruise booked for May of 2020, there was a lot of other onboard activities. That you could

Ryan:

Mm

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

advance things like the golf simulator and a lot of times a lot of activities like that and I didn't see any of that this time around. So can you tell me like, is it like when I open my navigator app the day

Ryan:

Yes. Yes. Yes. Absolutely.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

of stuff can I see? What's good? What are the other activities that I'm going to be doing all

Ryan:

So the main thing that you're going to do now with your excursion day is just that. If you were going to Cozumel and you wanted to swim with the tiger sharks. You wanted to have a beach day. That's the kind of stuff that you're going to do. But obviously with this four night cruise, you're not going to necessarily do that. Then on the ship you're going to have those things that you're going to pay for. So you're going to have the whiskey tasting, or the champagne tasting, or the dessert tasting. That kind of stuff. A lot of the pop up events, like the trivia, or the game shows, or the different ship tours, those are going to pop up in your navigator, kind of like what I talked about a while ago talking about celebrity, those things weren't available until right before the cruise. So right now it's more about what am I paying for? What am I reserving space for so for disney? With kids a lot of times that means bippity boppity boutique or that means specific character meet and greets

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

So there is something called the Royal Gathering and I do want to book that but I cannot book it until I check in, which is in November. And from what I understand, it's exactly what it says. It's a gathering of princesses, but it might vary which princesses you get. But it sounds like there's five or so of

Ryan:

Absolutely. Yep,

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

And that is something you book in advance, but it's, it's not an extra charge. It's just getting a

Ryan:

You're getting your space basically. And that is one thing I'll say with Disney. You can go several different ways. You can go crazy with the pictures. And get all the pictures with all the characters and pictures with your family or You don't have to do that what I found was a lot of people especially because we went on our cruise right after thanksgiving A lot of people were doing christmas card photos I mean they were dressed up. If you go on royal caribbean if you're on celebrity people dress up to get their photos But obviously disney has those characters I would just warn you If you want a ton of character photos and unless you reserve those times you're going to be standing in long lines

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

Okay. Good to know. I did book a photo package. That

Ryan:

Absolutely I think you should i'm not saying don't do that Just know that you're going to sacrifice some some time because you're going to get those photos

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

It's a good thing to note too. If you pre purchase those photos, then they are a little bit cheaper and you you can purchase all the pictures, which was like 160 or something like that, or you could get like, A package of 10 or a package of 15, but for me, I really love having access to all of them. So I just went ahead and did

Ryan:

Well, and here's the deal. You're going to be getting tons of photos throughout the entire trip. So, for instance, every night at dinner, they'll come around and they'll take your picture at the table. Those aren't the best pictures, but they're nice pictures of your group, right? There's going to be pop up photographers. There's going to be pop up characters. And if you just get that all included package, you don't have to worry about it. Because the last night of the cruise... They're going to have their pictures set up, and you can actually, at least they did this pre COVID. I'm not sure how they do it now. You can actually go and look at your photos, and they kind of guilt you into, Oh, this is a really nice photo of us. I guess I better, I guess I better buy this. I'm not saying that it's a bad thing. It's just that's one of the, one of their revenue streams is, people getting pictures on the cruise.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

I just always think I just love having, those pictures around. My kids love looking at photo albums. I think it's just something fun to have that

Ryan:

And you know what? Here's the deal. It's your gosh darn first cruise as a family, and it's a Disney cruise, and you're a Disney family, you need those pictures. And if you get the package, then you can download them and you can do whatever you want with them.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

I can make my own dang

Ryan:

You can make your own dang Christmas card.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

Maybe you'll get one, Ryan. I don't

Ryan:

We'll see. Don't... I can't remember the last time I'd sent out a Christmas card, so don't hold your breath.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

What? I send them every year.

Ryan:

So the next thing that's going to come up is your online check in. For most people, this happens at 30 days out. You may have a little wiggle room here based on your loyalty status. But with you, it'll be 30 days out. So, you've already paid in full. Actually, you've already done that before your excursions. That's one thing to, to note. With Disney, you have to be paid in full before you do excursions. Other cruise lines, you do not. You just follow their schedule. So with this, you're actually going to get the actual documentation and check in for your cruise.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

Okay. So, I hope that I have everything ready. I actually had everything ready this past week because I thought

Ryan:

Because you thought you were checking in.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

I could do my excursions and I was like, Ryan, why isn't this showing up?

Ryan:

yeah, so, so basically here is you're kind of registering for, you know how I've said that the, that the first day of a cruise is kind of like camp? Think of this, you're registering for camp. You kind of need to have all the demographic information. You need to have your passports or whatever identification you're using. Most cruise lines will have you submit some sort of picture. You'll take just a generic picture of everybody and they'll give you instructions to do that.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

A picture of yourself and a picture of your passport.

Ryan:

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Basically the picture will be used as your ID. One thing to note here is if you are traveling with a lot of different folks, make sure you know everything about them. What's their address? What's their date of birth? What's their middle name? All that stuff that you're going to need to know. And the best way to do this is to Just have a copy of their passport. I I have a copy of my parents passports I have a copy of everybody in my family their passports just so if i'm doing this for my group I just I have it and I can go from there

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

you have a copy, do you have, like, you've

Ryan:

I have a scanned car. I have a I both I have a I have a physical copy But then I also have a scanned copy just

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

it in. And that scanned version is what you

Ryan:

correct. Yep. Yep Yep, this is where you'll double check things like your dining. This is where you know what your dining time is This is where you'll register your kids if you want to sign them up for the kids club and again you can You can sign your kids up for the kids club while you're on board. This just saves time to to do it this way and then for most people the biggest thing is at the end of that Registration and i'll stress that again. You have to go through the entire registration You get your port arrival time and most people want obviously they want to start their vacation early And so they get the earliest port arrival time now julie You have a little different situation because you are using Disney transportation. So talk us through setting that up.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

Since I'm staying at the Polynesian for a couple days before my cruise I just chose to do Disney's transportation to the port Everyone that is in my group that is staying at a Disney resort prior to the cruise, we're taking DCL transport, which is just like a bus that will come and pick you up. I felt like that was the easiest thing since I've never done it before. The bus will know where it's going. I don't have to worry about anything. However, when I've worked with clients that are coming in, we always recommend you come in at least the day

Ryan:

Oh, absolutely. 100%. Yes.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

And then I am either recommending that they... stay if they're going out of Port Canaveral. I recommend they're staying at the Hyatt at the airport or I've had people stay at a hotel close to the port and we have access to packages that we book for clients that will include the transportation to the port or most of those hotels will then have transportation to the port. So I have a family friend traveling with us as well. And they're a similar setup to my family, you know, mom, dad, and they have two kids, so they will be flying in the day before, they'll be staying at a hotel near the port. So I've arranged their transportation from the airport to the hotel, and then the hotel has a shuttle to go to the port, and then we've kind of done the same thing coming back as well.

Ryan:

I've done multiple ways. So, the first time we cruised out of Port Canaveral we were at Disney, but we chose to do a private transfer. So, I just had a, A private transfer pick us up, and take us to the port, and then they picked us up from the port and took us back to the airport. I've also stayed at Cocoa Beach, right outside of Port Canaveral. And, like, literally, I woke up the next day, and our Royal Caribbean cruise ship was staring at me outside of our hotel. Uber.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

Wow.

Ryan:

I would say there's no reason, if you're staying at Port Canaveral, there's no reason to schedule transfer between your hotel and the port outside of your hotel. If your hotel offers it, by all means use that, but otherwise just Uber or Lyft it. You're, you're literally within five minutes away.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

I think for my clients, even though their hotel offers a shuttle to the cruise port, we do have to like reserve it, like just put their name on the list

Ryan:

yep. And so one thing to think about too, and this will happen after your registration, Julie, your online check in, you will actually get Disney has done it several different ways. They may have an online version or they may mail you a version of your luggage tags. I've seen it kind of both ways depending on the cruise line. You'll want to put those luggage tags on the morning of your cruise. do not. If you're flying in the day before, put those luggage tags on your, on your bags before you fly because those will likely get lost in, in the transport there. So I'm just telling folks, wait until you get there. All you need to do is go to the desk and ask for a staple and you can fold them and staple them right there or their sticker tags. But make sure that you have those as part of your documentation. I do this and I know I'm old school, but I print everything out. So I have, I have backup copies of those luggage tags. I have backup copies of our online kind of ticket to get in. I have backups of our cruise documents. I have backups of our travel insurance. I just want to have it and recycle it later, knowing that I have it. I always print off a couple extra luggage tags because we may come home with a different bag or we may bring a different bag that we weren't planning to based on packing.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

It's a good idea to print extras.

Ryan:

And one thing with that I will say, with the online check in and then talking about stuff like luggage tags and all that kind of stuff, don't stress. If you don't get your online check in done right away, your cruise is not ruined. If you don't have the luggage tags with you, they have luggage tags at the port. You're okay. You haven't ruined your cruise. Just show up, explain the situation, and they are there to help you 100%.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

I have a little bit of a funny story to go along with this, I laugh about it every time I think about it, so I hope I can brighten someone's day. When you do those check ins, regardless of what cruise line it is, get all your stuff situated before you sit down to do your check in process. So I have clients that were sailing on Royal Caribbean this week, and they were doing their check in. You know, a couple months ago, and when it came time to upload the photo of each passenger, they thought that they needed it right at that moment. And my client ran in and took a picture of her, her boyfriend. Like he was sleeping and she was like, wake up, I need your picture. And. I, I just, yeah, I laugh so hard every time I think about the picture of this

Ryan:

That's funny.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

you know, and then I just think like, oh my gosh, did he have that picture on

Ryan:

Right, right,

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

the cruise? Just go back, find a picture on your phone and crop it,

Ryan:

Now you do have to be a little careful because they do want like a neutral background and stuff like that. And again, just like with having my parents passports and everything scanned, I have a photo that I've taken and we use that for multiple cruises. I just have that in my possession so that I can, next time they go on a cruise with us or my kids go on a cruise with me, unless they've grown up and changed a lot, you know You're kind of different the next

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

They do want it to be current, they want it to be a picture by yourself, and it cannot be the same as the photo on your passport.

Ryan:

Yep. Yep

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

All right, so Ryan, this is something super unique about Disney Cruise

Ryan:

It is.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

I'm very excited about to not have to think about making dining reservations. So tell us about rotational dining on Disney ships.

Ryan:

So, other than several adult only options that you pay a little extra for, you are set up to sample all of the restaurants on the Disney Cruise ship. On the Wish, there are three different sit down restaurants,

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

there's an Arendelle restaurant, the Marvel restaurant, and then 1923.

Ryan:

and so you will, during your four night cruise, you will eat at each of those restaurants, and then you will also have one night will be a pirate night, and whatever restaurant you're at may have a special menu based on that. And one thing that is fun about Disney Cruise Line is, even though you are experiencing different restaurants, Your serving team moves with you. So if you're in the Marvel restaurant the first night, you're going to get to know your server and your assistant server, and they're going to get to know your likes, your dislikes, what you want to drink. Do you have any special requests? And then the next night when you're at 1923, guess what? They're there again, and they've already got your Diet Coke set out, and they know that your son wants extra bread and all that kind of stuff. And then the next night when you're at Arendelle, It's like clockwork because you've had them for two other nights and they really get to know you with us, by the third night they were calling us by our first names. That's really special. It really is. Now I will say on other cruise lines, when you're in the main dining room, you will often have the same servers, but when you go to another restaurant, you don't. So that's what's unique about Disney, Is you really develop those relationships with the serving team. We had our assistant server kind of struck up a friendship with our kids and my son wrote wrote her a little note at the end of the cruise and she was so touched and Said that she has a little box that she keeps all these kind of cards in and our server Had figured out that my son liked magic, and so every night he would show him a different magic trick, and then he would show him how to do it, and then about a month after our cruise, there was a talent show at church, and so my son entered his magic tricks, and he did some of the magic tricks that the server had shown him on the cruise, it's just a neat little thing yeah, you feel completely pampered, completely, completely pampered,

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

and so in addition to like the servers moving with you and You can correct me if I have this wrong, but I'd like the idea that Disney has these different restaurants and you get to experiencing them, you get to experience them without having to upgrade. So like on a Royal Caribbean or a Celebrity or a Carnival, you would be eating in the main dining room every night,

Ryan:

correct. Yes

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

an upgraded package.

Ryan:

Now one thing I will say for my experience with those is the menu will change So you might have different themes at that But yes, you would have that same

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

it's the same

Ryan:

correct. Absolutely. Yeah. Yeah

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

location whereas with disney it's really you're really getting to try these different things without having to upgrade

Ryan:

It's a great benefit of Disney Cruise Line, especially when you have so many little kids and you have waitstaffs that are used to and understand working with little diners. I think that's a real, that's a real key. It's a great thing on a Disney Cruise.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

and I think that there's also a program with disney where you can I believe it's at the early

Ryan:

Mm hmm. Yep.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

and correct me again if i'm wrong on this I forget what it's called, but you basically tell them you want your kid's meal to come fast, they can eat, and then they escort them to the kid's club.

Ryan:

Yeah, so you'll have staff from the kids club that a certain time during the first dining, they will come get them and and take them down. I don't believe that Celebrity did this, but Royal did what was called Family Time Dining. So if you signed up for this, you were at the early dining and they would do the same thing, it was like you had to sign up, it wasn't extra, but you had to sign up for it as your dining time.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

right. I just love that they give you that opportunity to kind of eat as a family and then some some adult time

Ryan:

We have enjoyed watching you eat macaroni and cheese, now leave so we can have a third glass of wine.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

Right.

Ryan:

And you won't watch us eat these four desserts.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

Bye. Even better. Even better.

Ryan:

Well, hey, Julie, there is a lot more to talk about with your first cruise, but first I want to talk about where in the world does all things travel? I went back to the last couple episodes and a city in the United States that we have not talked about yet is Oklahoma City. Have you been to Oklahoma City?

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

I haven't.

Ryan:

I have not either, and I was blown away when I looked at things to do in Oklahoma City. There are tons of museums, and so there's the Oklahoma City National Memorial based on the the Oklahoma City attack. But then there's also the First Americans Museum. There is a museum that is dedicated to the mixtape and the music based on the mixtape. There is a National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. There's an Oklahoma City of Museum of Art. There's a Contemporary Arts Center. So, I'm impressed. There's a lot to do here in Oklahoma City. I think that we should meet our listener at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. Doesn't that sound fun?

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

It does sound fun. Get your cowboy

Ryan:

Get your cowboy boots on. Well, hey, Oklahoma City listener, we are so glad that you're listening to All Things Travel. Do us a favor, reach out to Julie or I. You can do that either on Facebook or via email, because I would love to send a little thank you gift out to Oklahoma, just for being a listener of the show.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

So once the cruise is booked, final payment's done, I've booked any excursions that I can book ahead of time that I want to book. Now I really kind of start to think about what each day of my cruise is going to look like. And this is one of my favorite parts of planning a trip, imagining every single day. And so I realized that when I started thinking about this, I had so many questions for Ryan. So this is really just going to be, I'm just going to be shooting questions at Ryan and hoping he has some

Ryan:

Let's do it.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

So I want to know, what is it like when I arrive at the port using my Disney Cruise Line transportation from the Polynesian and boarding the ship? Like, what should I expect? What is that going to look like for me?

Ryan:

Okay, so you already have your luggage tags on, because I told you to do that. And if for some reason you don't have them, at the port, you grab your luggage and you let them know you need luggage tags and they'll take care of you. But there's going to be porters at the sidewalk. So, obviously with your bus, you'll be in a certain area and they'll unload your stuff, kind of like what they used to do with the Magical Express. If you're just pulling up in either an Uber or a taxi or something like that. You'll unload, the porters will take your bags. This is a situation where you're going to tip them a little bit because they're taking care of your bags. This is the last time you're going to see your bags, until they're in your stateroom later that day. So anything you need, or anything you're not comfortable having them move around for you, you need to have with you. So, Laptops, CPAP machines, medications, stuff for your babies. If you want to get into your swimsuit after lunch and hop in the pool right away. That kind of stuff because they're not going to have your stateroom ready necessarily until later in the afternoon. you want to have that stuff accessible. But if you don't, you just pass off your luggage and you don't see it again and it's really nice.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

Would I expect to be able to get to my room before dinner

Ryan:

Yes. Yes. Yes. Maybe not a lot. It just depends. It's kind of like checking into the resort, right? It's... They'll say this is the time that it's available, and they'll try to do it beforehand, but they can't guarantee it.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

Okay.

Ryan:

So then basically what you're going to do is you're going to walk into the terminal building, and you'll have your documents. Your... Identification your passport or whatever you're using. You'll have your cruise documents are probably on your phone where they'll scan you in They'll check your ID You'll go through security like you would at the airport. So they're gonna have your bags go through They'll check your ID a couple times you'll you'll kind of be like why do people keep checking who I am, but it's just for safety they double check your boarding number and you will sit and wait till your boarding number is called

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

Okay.

Ryan:

and basically over the loudspeaker, they'll say, Hey, now we are boarding groups three through six you walk through a tunnel, a gangway tunnel and you go on to the ship. Now, one of the cool things for Disney, and probably a very special moment for you and your family, is Disney will actually announce you as you're boarding the ship. And cast members are clapping, and they're excited, and they're announcing your name over the loudspeaker, and you walk into this beautiful atrium, and your kids are gonna lose their mind. It's really, really fun. It's a rockstar moment for Disney fans.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

I can't wait. Okay, so I boarded the ship. What do I do first?

Ryan:

Okay, so... Most people will go and eat first there's usually the buffet or quick service. On the Wish, it's more of like a food court type area is open. There will probably be a sit down restaurant that's open. I would opt for that because it's a little less crazy.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

I know which one's open is

Ryan:

it's all, it'll be on your app. It'll be on your app that day and you'll see what's open. And you will also get a navigator at the port. Like as you're waiting, they'll give you a little. Magazine or something like that that will kind of list everything or you'll be able at that point to see things There's a couple things that need to happen if you haven't taken care of it already If you have issues with dining we want to make special reservations or we have really specific requests Or we have dietary issues that we need to make sure that people know about and we haven't Talk to anybody about that yet. That's what those first couple hours are for Just so you make sure that you've crossed your i's and dotted your t's

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

Got it.

Ryan:

But I would say for most people they get on and they want to do one of two things. They go check out the ship Or they go eat.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

I have heard that that's a good time to go do the slides.

Ryan:

a great time to go do the slides. Because people are not mentally there yet. And so if you're getting on early and your group, your family can kind of hold off until eating later or maybe you just want to have a snacky lunch that day if you're up by the pool and you just want to do the grab and go type stuff that is a fantastic way to spend your time.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

Well, and actually, so our room is on the same deck as the pools.

Ryan:

So yeah.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

would be really convenient for us for knowing that our rooms are

Ryan:

You know what I would do it if I were you is I would I would just stay away from Everybody trying to get their first cruise meal and I would go hang out at the pools I I would make sure like the grab and go options were available by the pools because on the wish they have barbecue and Tex Mex and burgers and pizza and I mean Again, this is your first experience. So I would just take advantage of that that first day and then, a couple hours later, when your room's ready, then you go hang out. Yeah.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

If we're going to be on that pool deck and then eating right there, we will know when our room is ready because. We'll be right there. So that'll work out really well. Awesome. Okay, so one question going back to the transportation And when the calling the boarding groups, so when I do my check in and they give me my port arrival time I assume they're gonna line that up Knowing that I have my

Ryan:

Yeah, yeah,

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

like it's not like our bus is gonna unload and half of us are gonna have this boarding time and The other half of us are gonna have to wait two

Ryan:

If I don't have the DCL transportation, and they say you need to arrive between 30, they will hold you off. And other cruise lines have done the same thing. They will hold you off until it's your time. So, don't show up at 9. 30 thinking that you're gonna get two extra hours of ship time. You do want to arrive around that. Port time. Otherwise you're going to be standing around and waiting.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

Okay. But that's not something I need to worry about with the bus.

Ryan:

Not with it, not, you still need to do all that. Yeah, but now with the transportation kind of takes that step out of it.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

Talk to me about a muster drill.

Ryan:

So a muster drill is a safety drill basically it's showing you where on the ship if there was an emergency or some place where you needed to be accounted for or get off the ship. In those fun little orange boats that you're going to see the muster spot is where your family would go to make that happen. So basically what they want to do is they want to be able to show you where that is.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

Is that a quick experience that have doing that muster drills that quick? I know some ships have switched to doing it on the app.

Ryan:

I've done it a couple different ways. Disney Cruise Line does do in person muster drills. So you will actually be given a time, and everybody on the ship will do this at the exact same time. It's usually, like, 4 o'clock. Everybody's on, but they haven't left yet. You will actually physically go to your muster location And there's numbers posted all over the ship. You're not gonna get lost And you will go they will check you in and they'll say hey if there's an issue, here's where you come other cruise lines my experience with Royal and celebrity you basically do the emergency preparedness on your app through short little videos, and then you go to the muster area, so again, you can physically show them, hey, I know where I'm going, and they check you off that you've done it. So, same type of idea, just a little different process, but you're gonna get plenty of information, and if for some reason you miss that muster drill, trust me, they will find you and they will make sure that you do it, because it's law. They, they have to do that. Yeah, they're required to.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

I think this is kind of something that's a little gone to the wayside with cruising. You used to have these very formal cruise nights that everyone would talk about. Do I need to pack special dinner outfits for cruising?

Ryan:

up to your discretion. Especially with a shorter cruise, like a four night cruise, there may be kind of a dress up night, but probably not, to be honest. People will dress up more for pirate night than they will for a dress up night. What I would tend to wear on a cruise is, I would wear khaki pants and a button up suit. Hawaiian shirt. That's kind of my, that's kind of my cruise outfit for dinner. If I'm going

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

you kind of look like that on a regular day.

Ryan:

Yeah, that's kind of the Ryan style. But, I would dress up by wearing pants. All right. Well, no, what I mean is instead of wearing shorts and flip flops, I would wear, boat shoes and khaki pants. If I'm going to a specialty dining, I would check into the dress code there. Because I know some of those do require that. You can dress up as much or as little as you want. I would, well, when I say as little... You know, there are people that don't dress up, but, resort casual is appropriate, you're not going to wear your swim shirt and swimsuit to dinner, but you do not have to dress up more than resort casual unless you want to. There's plenty of opportunities to get your picture taken, so if you want to dress up a little nicer and do that, that's perfectly fine. But you will not be out of place by wearing a sundress and sandals or a Stevens and a polo shirt and khaki pants. That is perfectly fine. Obviously, the kids can dress However, you know, if your son wants to be in shorts and whatever, that's perfectly fine. Nobody

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

But so are shorts not okay for the guys?

Ryan:

They are, I just, I just prefer to kind of dress up a little bit more

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

Got it. Okay. That's that's a

Ryan:

Yeah, that's a Ryan

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

All right.

Ryan:

I, I would say, I would say, I just think that's appropriate, so.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

Got it. Okay. I'll keep that in mind. All right. So since this is the Disney Cruise, where can I find characters?

Ryan:

you're going to use the app. The characters are going to kind of be all over the place at different times. And the app is going to be your go to throughout. Once you board the ship, your app is your lifeline. That's going to tell you where, when, you can create a little schedule, you can create reminders everything's going to be filtered through there.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

We talked about this a little bit But in your experience with cruising, what should my go to breakfast and lunch spots be? Should I look for sit down? Should I just grab something at a buffet?

Ryan:

On a Disney Cruise you've basically got three different options for breakfast. You can do like a continental breakfast room service.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

Oh

Ryan:

So sometimes that's nice, especially if it's a C day and you just want to kind of have a relaxing time. Oftentimes, to be honest, on a C day, what we'll do is we'll get like pastries, fruit and coffee and have that and then go have brunch a little later. Go up to the buffet, a couple hours later. So kind of go slower into our morning or. If you're having an early excursion and you want to just grab and go you can do do it that way too or you can do the buffet the the kind of the food court the marceline market that they have You can do that or every morning. There'll be a sit down restaurant I would say To be honest, if you're not getting off the ship at Nassau, that would probably be a good day to have a sit down meal. Because you're gonna have people wanting to get up, get breakfast at the buffet, get off the ship. I will say not as many people get off at Nassau because Nassau is such a common stop that once you've been there a couple times you don't tend to get off. But that's what I would do. And then the C day, if you're going to go to the buffet, I would go either early or later.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

Mm hmm. go at 9 a.

Ryan:

Don't go at 9am. Don't go at 9am. But all those are options for you. To be honest with your family, whatever's best for your kids. If it's better for them to sit down and get one thing off the menu, or if it's better if you feed them in the room, or if it's better if they just sit down and you keep going and grabbing whatever, just kind of whatever fits them.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

it. Okay.

Ryan:

You're not gonna go hungry. You're never gonna go hungry on any cruise, but specifically Disney Cruise. Lunch is gonna,

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

kinda like my question for lunch. Yeah. Like, is it gonna be, like, readily available?

Ryan:

lunch is most likely going to be that Marceline Market, kind of that food court type area. Or, on a C Day, a lot of people will book that Palo Brunch. that's a really popular adults only option. And then there'll probably be one or two restaurants open. On the sea day. And then obviously if it's a pool area, you're going to have those grab and go, your pizza, your burgers, your barbecue, and so you just kind of mix and match, you know, I mean, however you want to do it. If you want to sit down and have a meal or you have a lot of options, absolutely. There are, there are several things on a Disney cruise you're going to pay extra for food wise. But gosh, not many.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

Okay. Okay. Good

Ryan:

And you've heard me talk, I mean, sometimes we'll split it up. We'll go have this for lunch, and then we'll pop up to the buffet for dessert. We'll have a little something here, and then we'll go get a sandwich at another place. You can mix and match with dining as much as you want.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

Okay. All right. So it sounds like it'll be easier than what I

Ryan:

It's very much an all inclusive kind of mindset when it comes to food.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

Got it. Okay. So with it being a Disney cruise, are there fireworks?

Ryan:

There will be fireworks and again that's going to be dictated in your navigator app. So it's going to tell you what night or nights they're going to have the fireworks. They'll have some sort of stage show. It will probably coordinate with Pirate Night. And, and so there'll be like a pirate stage show. The main thing is you want to get up there so you have a space to see it.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

That sounds super fun. When we go it is my immediate family. My parents will be there and then a family friend and their children. So what is there to do on the ship for the older generation like my parents?

Ryan:

They have trivia shows they have people giving talks or presentations They have adult only spaces So if grandma and grandpa want to go grab a coffee or a drink at the adult only space and kind of have a more adult They can certainly do that. There are different fitness activities. There's different shopping stuff going on, maybe like sales or presentations of stuff. So, I mean, there's all that kind of stuff is still there. There's movies. I mean they'll show they'll show several movies in the theater my daughter and I saw frozen 2 when it was in the theaters, we saw it in the theater on our cruise.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

Thing I am excited for, that they'll show the movies that are in the theater or about to come in the theater. So I think that on our ship, we'll probably be able to see the new Disney movie, which is also called Wish,

Ryan:

That theater fills up. So for instance, my daughter and I were able to get a seat. Nobody else was Or nobody else was willing to kind of be all over the place around the theater. If you're taking a big group, you want to make sure that you get there early. One thing, food wise, that is not included for guests, unless you're a concierge guest, is the popcorn and the snacks outside the theater. Are not included, but you can bring things in from the other places. So go get your ice cream, go get your cookies, go get whatever you want to have during the movie and just bring it with you.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

So it sounds like there's a lot going on. I need to make sure I've got the Navigator

Ryan:

And like I've said with other cruises is you're gonna go through, you're gonna mark a bunch of stuff. And then don't stress about it. If you make it, you make it. If you don't, you don't. You know, there's gonna be some stuff that's non negotiable, and there's other stuff that it's like, Eh, this was a good idea three days ago. I don't really feel like it. I just want to sit here on this lounger. And it's all good. It's all good.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

So, the cruise is wrapping up. Is there a benefit to booking my next cruise while I'm still on the

Ryan:

Yeah, so one of the things that Disney does, and most cruise lines have deals like this, but one of the things that Disney does is they have a future cruise area where you will go and you can book a future cruise. Now you, you can do one of two things. You can literally book an actual cruise or you can put a cruise placeholder. And so, with that, the benefit is You, put down a 250 deposit and you can basically then use that for any cruise, most any cruise, there are, there are a few exceptions, but most any cruise you have two years in which to use that deposit essentially.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

Does the cruise have to be announced yet?

Ryan:

No because Disney doesn't announce their cruises that far ahead So the advantage is oftentimes you're getting a little bit cheaper of a cruise maybe 10 percent Which I shouldn't say is a little bit but you know It's and then and then you're putting down that much smaller deposit yeah

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

Yes, right. So sounds like a good deal.

Ryan:

Yep. Yep.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

Sounds like a good

Ryan:

It is definitely worth checking out. Now from a travel agent perspective, I've had folks do this and please, please, please. Just double check. Make sure that our names are connected if you want to work with us again. Or let us know when you get back that you've done that because we don't have a lot of time to connect ourselves to the crews if they haven't done that while you're booking it.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

Yes. And make sure that you do not pay in full.

Ryan:

Don't do that anyway. Unless you're getting a cruise that's happening, like, in the next month, don't ever pay in full until you have to.

JulieDCL_Prep-Julie-webcam-00h_00m_00s_167ms-StreamYard:

That was so helpful.

Ryan:

You're gonna find tons of stuff to do. You're gonna find things that you didn't even know you wanted to do. It's a lot of fun and it's perfect for your type of family because they are awesome with kids and your kids are gonna fall in love with that kids club and all of a sudden you and Steve are gonna be like, wait a minute. Our kids are like gone. You know, I mean that.
