Ryan:

Hello and welcome to All Things Travel. I hope you've been enjoying our recent episodes highlighting destinations on your travel wish list. This week we're going to introduce you to the Galapagos Islands and Antarctica. These destinations sound exotic in their own ways and maybe even a little overwhelming to think about when you're planning a trip. But that's what we're here for.

Julie:

Galapagos islands and an article have really been trending and travel lately. Brian, have you had any clients been interested

Ryan:

Yes, I've had folks, I don't believe in Antarctica, other than kind of, hey, wouldn't that be cool? But yes, Galapagos Islands, I've had several families, so kids and parents, looking at doing this adventure excursion. And these trips look amazing. These are life changing trips that we're going to talk about today.

Julie:

I would agree. And I think the conversations I've had with clients that we get to talking about these destinations always have a tone of, wow, wouldn't that be cool? So that's why I really am excited about this episode to show you how you can make this happen.

Ryan:

These trips do tend to be for the experienced traveler, an expedition cruise to the Galapagos or Antarctica, it's not going to be your first experience cruising. These do tend to be for folks who have traveled a lot of variety and are kind of looking for that new interesting next thing I think what we're going to talk about is you can really have some interesting lifetime experiences Visiting one of these I know for me. I don't really have an interest in visiting antarctica But galapagos islands Really could be something you would talk me into julie

Julie:

I think I talked myself into it when I was researching for this

Ryan:

Ha ha ha ha ha ha! That always makes a good episode. It's

Julie:

It's an occupational hazard, and I went

Ryan:

Such an ab Occupational hazard. Yes,

Julie:

I said, Stephen, Look at this itinerary. Isn't this so cool? I'm not sure if I've sold him yet but I'm sure he'd go with

Ryan:

Yep. Been there, said that. I hear it. You want to plan a trip to an amazing destination but don't know how to get started? As your travel advisors, we work with you to create a customized itinerary for your vacation and take the stress out of planning so you can focus on the fun and create those memories. You can reach me at ryan at ryan at creatingmagicvacations. com.

Julie:

And you can reach me at Julie at CreatingMagicVacations. com I think when we think of the Galapagos they seem so exotic and one of the real draws of them is it's described as a living museum and a showcase of evolution. With a melting pot of unique species and ongoing volcanic activity. And I know that that sounds really wordy, but it's so true. The it's just amazing. The islands are so unique because. They're located on both sides of the equator, so sometimes the water is warm, some parts of it is cold. They have currents that come up from Antarctica, so these destinations are kind of tied together. But it's just this real natural phenomenon about these really magical islands. There's also 20 percent of the species of animals on these islands are endemic to the islands, which means you can't find them anywhere else in the world, which is just so cool! Why would you not

Ryan:

this animal, you have to go there.

Julie:

Right, and not only do you get, it's not like you see it from afar some of the stuff I was reading was because of these animals growing up in such a sheltered environment where they're not exposed to the outside world, they don't have a fear reflex. So you're on the beach and the sea lions are just there with you and the penguins are there with you and it's that is such a cool immersive experience.

Ryan:

So some interesting things about the Galapagos Islands is it's a small group of islands in the Pacific Ocean off the west side of Ecuador. So often people will go into Ecuador and go from there, right? It's technically an archipelago. composed of 127 small islands, inlets, and rocks. Some islands have disappeared and others are still forming, but only 5 of those 127 islands, Julie, are inhabited with an overall population in the Galapagos Islands of about 30, 000. So some of the bigger cities, well, bigger, you know, relatively speaking, you've got Santa Cruz, you've got San Cristobal, Isabela, Floriana. And one of the things like you just said with that is the Galapagos Islands are known for their unique animals. So, I think for most people, when they think of animals in the Galapagos, what do they think of?

Julie:

The tortoises were

Ryan:

and five hundred pounds. I mean,

Julie:

the largest of the tortoises. The tortoises were the largest of the tortoises.

Ryan:

Oh, yes, yes, the largest of the tortoise, not of the animals. I want to get a picture with a tortoise, oh my gosh.

Julie:

Turtles are my favorite animal in general, so to see a giant tortoise, I would just be like, I would just be there all day.

Ryan:

Different animals like the white and black tip reef sharks, Sally whitefoot crabs, green sea urchins, chocolate chip sea stars, which really sounds like it should be a dessert when you go to beaches in Jamaica green sea urchins, Penguins the penguins can actually survive here because there's a cold current that flows up from antarctica So they're comfortable in the weather there other than other than turtles. We know that the booby bird right the blue footed boobies the marine iguanas that can hunt in the water and on land sea lions And this are one of these animals that you talk about, you know, they don't have that fear of humans so you can really interact with them. And then obviously because they're surrounded by different bodies of water. You've got all these migrating animals like dolphins, whales, hammerhead sharks, manta rays. And then you've got. 13 species of Darwin's finches in the Galapagos. What an amazing array of different animals that you're going to see. And don't forget the landscape much like Hawaii, you've got different colored beaches here. So you've got red and green beaches, volcanic formations, avian species found nowhere else in the world. This sounds awesome.

Julie:

Just to point this out real quick, you mentioned those 13 species of Darwin's famous finches. So that's kind of one of the things that made the Galapagos famous was way back in I want to say the 1700s, right? That's where he developed his theory of evolution. Just studying those finches. A lot of history is on those islands. A couple things to consider when you want to visit the Galapagos. You can go year round, but there is different seasons. The best time to go when it's warm season is December through June. Dry season is July to November, and that just means the cold weather from the ocean currents is coming in. So there can be some mist and it might not have. as many animals that you can see. But depending on the exact animal that you're interested in, you might want to research when the best time to go see that specific animal is. Like Ryan mentioned, you fly into Ecuador and then there are two main airports in the Galapagos. So whichever destination your specific vacation is departing from is where you would go from there. And we'll talk about that a little bit later. There are a couple of interesting considerations that are very unique to visiting the Galapagos because it is a protected destination. There are entrance fees that you have to To get into the Galapagos, there's also a tourist transit and migration control card you have to have. A lot of the tour operators that we work with are going to help take care of those things for you, but just something to consider that it will be a little bit of an extra cost. Their currency is the U. S. dollar, so that's helpful. They speak Spanish, being off of the coast of South America, and they do require that you have medical travel insurance when you go. Going back to what Ryan said earlier about how this isn't really a trip for someone who just wants to sit back and relax. This is a very adventure heavy trip. So they want you to have medical insurance because you're using many many different forms of transportation from cruising to your airplane to small boats to get in and out of the islands.

Ryan:

Julie, I'm excited to learn about the Galapagos Islands and I know you've been putting together for both that and Antarctica for today a trip with one of our favorite travel providers.

Julie:

Yes. So the trip I want to highlight for the Galapagos is called the Galapagos Islands Expedition Cruise. And this is a nine day vacation with Adventures by Disney. I know, I know, Dewey has to take Mickey everywhere, but I promise you I chose this adventure.

Ryan:

won't be there.

Julie:

yes, first of all, Mickey won't be there. And second of all, I chose this because out of all the itineraries that I researched for the Galapagos, this one was the most immersive. I read this itinerary and. Basically was ready to book myself a ticket. So I just want to highlight a couple of the great things that you are going to do on this trip. It is a very snorkeling and hiking heavy trip, but the best thing about doing it with adventures by Disney is everything is taken care of for you. All the equipment is provided. All the transfers are provided. It is an expedition cruise, which means you're going to fly into Ecuador, have about a day or so in Ecuador and then you're going to fly over to Baltra in the Galapagos where you're going to board the Galapagos Legend, which is the ship you'll be on. The nice thing about it being a cruise is that your price is very much an all inclusive price. You're going to go back to that ship for your meals. Which is great. That's huge. A lot of times with Adventures by Disney or really any kind of tour operator, you are paying for some of your meals, right, Ryan?

Ryan:

You would have one or two meals that you would be on your own for most days.

Julie:

Yep. This is not like that. For this, pretty much everything is included.

Ryan:

Now as you talk about the itinerary, one thing to point out with both the Galapagos and Antarctica is, these are general itineraries, but due to weather in both of these places and conditions, they will change things around. So you may, at some point, they say you're gonna go to this island, well, They may have to switch that and go to another island. Or, a lot of times what you'll see with Antarctica is it's what's called Captain's Choice. You know, the captains

Julie:

I have that in my itinerary for

Ryan:

captain and the meteorologist decide, Okay, this is what's best for this day. More than most, these are kind of general overviews, but they still give you a great idea of what you'd be doing.

Julie:

the first day you're going to come into Ecuador and you have a day to explore the city in South America there. And I feel like that is also a really great way to get started. Just kind of immerse yourself in that culture. Day two, they're going to take you on a plane over to Baltra. You're going to. Embark on your ship, the Galapagos Legend, you're going to go over to the North Seymour Island where you're going to join a naturalist, which is, again, a great thing about this. You have a guide for this entire trip, someone who is so specialized in this setting to tell you everything you need to know, make sure you're safe, make sure the animals are safe, and just make that a really special experience. So this will be a In adventure filled hike, you're going to go through the nesting colonies of the blue footed boobies and various birds that are on the island. And you might even see some sea lions and land iguanas. And this is just your first day on the Galapagos

Ryan:

You're like i've already taken 300 pictures and it's just day one

Julie:

Right? You show up, you see your ship, you kind of like drop your stuff off on the ship and go snorkeling. Just amazing. The next day you're going to go to Bartolome Island and Santiago Island. There's a morning hike there. Where you're going to hike up a summit trail. There's going to be some breathtaking views, including volcanic cones, lava bombs, these things called spatter and cinder cones that resemble the moon. I mean, how cool is that?

Ryan:

cool

Julie:

You're going to go snorkeling again, off of a beach of pinnacle rock, joined by penguins and sea lions, which, remember, they don't have that fear reflex. So they're right up, like, frolicking next to you.

Ryan:

i'm gonna be swimming along giving a high five to a sea lion Ha

Julie:

mean, just

Ryan:

ha ha ha.

Julie:

They have later in the day an afternoon walk where you can discover lava beds from recent flows on the island and the naturalist will also be giving you information about what's going on with the islands now. Talk and talk. So now they're talking about different flora that are making a comeback to the island as you hike over the lava and then another snorkel to end your

Ryan:

I can tell you from being in Hawaii at the Volcanoes National Park, that is a surreal experience to see those formations and to see that landscape with the lava and the eruptions. It's just otherworldly.

Julie:

So right, so imagine like seeing that lava hiking over it and then next thing you know, you're snorkeling and seeing these amazing animals again. On day four, you're going to go over to San Cristobal Island. You're going to go to the Pit Point Coastline Paga tour and hike and here. You're going to go down the coastline and you're going to see all the three different of those boobie species for the birds. And then again, you'll have a snorkel in the crystal clear waters of the island and go on a glass bottom kayak. Later in the afternoon, you're going to go to a a different beach. Where you'll also be hiking, snorkeling, kayaking, and just really kind of doing whatever you want there. Relaxing and enjoying, the animals and the flora there. Day five, you're still on San

Ryan:

boy, this looks like a great day to

Julie:

This is so cool. We're gonna try on the pronunciation here. So, let's go with Galapaguera. I don't know, what do you think,

Ryan:

Sure, that looks great.

Julie:

All right, DeSero, Colorado Tortoise Breeding

Ryan:

Oh my

Julie:

They describe this as visit this amazing natural reserve and breeding center that was built to improve the island's tortoise population. And during your visit, a naturalist will join you for a fascinating view of tortoises at various life stages. You get lunch at an organic farm nearby. Wear, you can also play basketball, volleyball, and soccer, kind of random, but very cool because you'll be Interacting with the locals,

Ryan:

yeah, yeah. I like it.

Julie:

cool. Then you're going to go later to this interpretation center and learn a lot about the formation of the Galapagos, its significance to the world, conservation efforts, and then another hike to end your day to see the species around that area. The next day, We are at Espanola Island. You're going to explore Gardner and Osborne Islets with a naturalist. Here you're going to go to the southernmost point, which is an estimated four million years old. And that is just so cool. You're going to see some white sand beaches, turquoise waters, and this is one of the most beautiful places in the Galapagos. The mockingbirds here are everywhere. They will land on your head and shoulders. You might want to wear like a hat or something, I guess. This is also where you're going to see some of those green sea turtles and sea lions coming right up to onto the beach to rest. You're kind of seeing a theme here, right? Lots of hiking, snorkeling, lots of really Really cool animals. You can also take a hike over to Suarez point where you're going to walk through a very beautiful area and encounter some of this island's residents, such as marine iguanas, which remember those are the only iguanas that can hunt on land and see the sea lions, the blue footed boobies, the endemic lizards, some birds, just very cool things. Day seven is a little bit more of a history lesson. Did you know that here on the Galapagos, they have an island excursion with the oldest post office in the Pacific? I mean, kind of random, but kind of cool

Ryan:

kind of random, but it's very cool.

Julie:

17 93, and it's still functions. You also get to go swimming and kayaking and kayaking this day. You can even send a letter from that post office if you

Ryan:

Of course you would.

Julie:

popular thing

Ryan:

Yeah, absolutely.

Julie:

Later in the day, you get to hike across Devil's Crown, which is rich with volcanic crystal and gives the sand a subtle green hue. And again, you're going to snorkel today. You're going to come across some of that island's inhabitants, including pink flamingos, green turtles, penguins, and they say harmless white tipped reef sharks. I don't know how I feel about that saying harmless. So our next day, we are going to head over to Santa Cruz Island. This is where you're going to get a lot more of that history. You're going to visit the Charles Darwin Research Station Fausto Lorena Breeding Center. You're going to visit the one time home of the famous Lonesome George, the last tortoise of the Pinta race. This center is in the Galapagos National Park Service and has a lot of buildings dedicated to providing knowledge and assistance through scientific research. And if you remember, like I mentioned earlier, Charles Darwin came here in the 1700s to study those finches, where he developed his theory of evolution. You're also going to tour a couple of centers that are really important for the conservation of the islands, learning about that, tour a local coffee farm. Later in the day, you're going to visit the Santa Cruz Highlands and take a privately guided tour of the Galapagos Tortoise Reserve. That would probably be my absolute favorite part of that trip. The trip is going to end with today, where you go to the Punta Bodich Beach and be some of the first humans to relax on this powdery sand beach. You can go snorkeling and swimming around in the turquoise waters and hike beside salt pools and dried white curls with a naturalist. After that day, then you're going to be heading home. You'll go back over to Ecuador and then fly home from there. The best thing about this, Ryan, is that you can go next Christmas. So what a perfect

Ryan:

Oh my gosh, this, Julie, this trip is amazing. I

Julie:

really once in a lifetime, right? Like really once in a lifetime.

Ryan:

I will say, I've heard a review of this trip from folks that went on this, and they were very experienced Adventures by Disney folks, and they said this trip was hard. I mean, there, there was a lot going on, it was very strenuous, it was amazing, but it was physically, taxing, as far

Julie:

you almost have to like train for it.

Ryan:

Yeah, yeah.

Julie:

You've got to be ready for it. It does start around 9, 000 a person, but let's consider, it includes all your food, all of those amazing excursions. I feel like that's a fair price for what you're

Ryan:

Oh, absolutely. What essentially turns into almost a two week trip once you get to to Quito Ecuador you're taking care of the entire time so Absolutely. And you know my experience with adventures by disney both my family and my clients, I can't say enough about how wonderful these people are.

Julie:

I would agree. I think that's awesome. So I've pretty much convinced myself to go. It won't be for a while. I never thought of myself as someone who would make it to the Galapagos islands. And now I'm like, wow, this is the coolest thing I've ever heard of. I might not be able to stop thinking about it.

Ryan:

I know you've got some Antarctica information to share with us as well, and I can't wait for that. But first, I want to talk about where in the world does all things travel? As I went back to the last couple episodes, a city in the United States that popped up that I, I don't remember seeing before necessarily on our list, was Houston, Texas. Have you been to Houston?

Julie:

through it, I

Ryan:

Oh, that doesn't count. In my, in my book an airport doesn't count.

Julie:

Oh, darn.

Ryan:

So, and I haven't either. Same as you, I've been through the airport. And I'm like, nope, that doesn't count, I've gotta go back. One thing that you don't know about Julie and I Julie and I are actually space and astronaut junkies. And one of our favorite shows right now is for All Mankind on Apple TV. Right, Julie?

Julie:

Yes.

Ryan:

If you haven't checked out that show, check it out. It's really cool. It's kind of like an alternative history of the space race and all that kind of stuff. In Houston, Julie, You can go to Space Center Houston. So it's located in the heart of NASA's spaceflight program. It's a must visit for fans of space exploration with 400 space related artifacts and numerous exhibits. You can can hop on a tram as part of this and actually go to Johnson Space Center to see the original mission control room and the behind the scenes look at the astronaut training facilities. Does that not sound amazing?

Julie:

That sounds so cool.

Ryan:

So, hey, listener. Julie and I want to meet you there and we will buy you a tang in the commissary so we can act like real astronauts. And thank you so much for listening to All Things Travel all the way from Houston, Texas.

Julie:

Love it.

Ryan:

Antarctica.

Julie:

Okay, so we say similar but different than the Galapagos because Antarctica is also a life changing experience. When you get there, you have to take in the sensation of being at the very ends of the world on a vast continent with no permanent human habitation. Just wildlife, mountains, rocks, and ice. I mean, how cool does that sound? You really can't do that anywhere else in the world except for this destination of Antarctica. Some of the really great experiences you can have there, and this has to be your why for wanting to go to Antarctica. You can witness thousands of fluffy penguin chicks. The blow of a whale and a seal pup nestled against his mother, then stop, listen, and take in the barking of the seals, the squawking of the penguins, the visceral rumble of a calving glacier, and the whistle of the wind. So that is how the tour operators describe this trip to Antarctica. It's life changing and you're going to witness these amazing natural experiences in the wild.

Ryan:

So when you think about Antarctica, Julie, you're leaving South America and you're going south and all of a sudden. You see ice, and it's just this mountain of ice, this sheet of ice, this land of ice that just keeps getting bigger and bigger and bigger, and I just can't, I mean, I know what it was like to go to Alaska this summer and see, A little bit of ice. This just has to be other, you know, I was going to say otherworldly again like I did with the Galapagos, but it's absolutely true, right? You are going to see wildlife that you would never see anywhere else. In their habitat versus adapting to our habitat, which is completely different. With this trip, there's some considerations that you need to have. Obviously, you know, you're going to be flying into Argentina. So you obviously need to be ready for international travel. You're going to travel through Patagonia down to Ushuaia. Which is usually the jumping off point for an antarctica, voyage there's going to be baggage restrictions with these types of trips because you might be taking different types of cruise lines and obviously spanish when your trip starts is the Language there and the currency is in pesos As a general rule, when it comes to packing, you are packing for an expedition meaning you're going to have more active wear, you're going to have things that are layered. Now what I will say is, a lot of these cruises will provide you your outerwear, your expedition clothing, so your boots, your gloves, your parkas, One thing to consider with this is just like with the Galapagos that Julie talked about, obviously the weather is going to impact what you wear and what you're able to do. And you're also going to be doing a lot of Zodiac excursions and landings with that. Being able to physically do that and not have issues becomes really important for your safety and your enjoyment.

Julie:

It's a super involved trip as we'll see And this is definitely something where has Ryan mentioned earlier, depending on the weather is really going to influence what you're doing that day, but It's another reason why I chose to share the itinerary that I'm going to share because They very much focus on that and more so give you a list of what you could be doing

Ryan:

With this trip, we're gonna fly down to Buenos Aires, aren't we?

Julie:

We are And I'm going to say again, we're going to go with Avengers by Disney again, mickey is not going to be there. I promise. This itinerary is so immersive. This really was truly the best out of all of the ones that I saw when I was researching. This is a 12 day trip. After you fly into buenos Aires, you're going to go down through Patagonia and you're going to board your ship. You're going to go through the Drake Passage and while you're on the ship, they're doing all sorts of awesome things for you. You're meeting the naturalist and learning about the areas that you're passing through. You are touring the ship. They're giving you different lectures about what to expect coming up and, and getting you ready for all the expedition type activities you're going to be doing once you do get to Antarctica. Depending on the current weather, the sea conditions, the voyage here through the Drake Passage, it can be rough, it can be calm, it can be somewhere in between. So make sure that you're bringing your medication if you are prone to some sea sickness. You're also going to have a couple things going on on the ship that are kind of expected things like fitness classes, spa, appointments but a couple other things that are going to be unique to the area, like an iceberg spotting contest. And I survived the Drake passage party.

Ryan:

I love it.

Julie:

Just some really fun stuff because it's such a such a monumental experience to go through that.

Ryan:

Now, now let's just stop here. Because you talk about this adventure that we're going to have in Antarctica, but we're also on a ship that accommodates a spa. So, it's the best of both worlds, right? When you're out and about, you are experiencing the wonder of Antarctica. When you come back to the ship, you're in a five star hotel.

Julie:

It's amazing. Yeah, and that's what makes these trips so great. The other thing that I loved about this itinerary is there was a lot of sessions that they called exploration preparation sessions. And this is where, you would kind of meet in smaller groups to make sure that you're prepared for what's coming. They're going to talk about your parka and your boots, because you're probably using the ones from the cruise line. Make sure everyone has ones that fit them, that they're comfortable wearing, that they know how to get on and off. You're going to be talking about safety using a Zodiac boat, because that's how you're doing the majority of your excursions. And then also, this sounds fun, a decontamination session. So, in their efforts to maintain the integrity of Antarctica's pristine, fragile ecosystem it's mandatory that everyone who goes to Antarctica decontaminate their outer clothing layer on their first day at sea. So you learn how to vacuum your own clothing, especially Velcro, and about boot contamination baths and all sorts of things to make sure you're keeping that environment safe. That's a really unique thing to this trip. All right, here comes the really fun part. Day five to nine, you're at the Antarctic Peninsula. And that's What I loved about this 12 day trip is that you got days five through nine in Antarctica. And it's so much time that if there is an interruption because of weather, you're going to be able to make it up another day.

Ryan:

Yes.

Julie:

Let's just talk about a couple of the daily excursions. options. And like Ryan said, this is typically something that is a captain's choice. But these are a lot of the things that are going to be available to you. They are mostly with Zodiac cruises. You can do just a Zodiac wildlife lookout where you kind of ride across the glacial waters. You're looking for local wildlife, looking for penguins. Orcas. I mean, the Zodiac is a small boat. So to have an orca, you know, come up out of the water right next to you. That's amazing. What a cool experience. You can also take the Zodiac cruise to the peninsula, where you're going to board the boat, cruise across the water, and step foot on that seventh continent of Antarctica, where very few people have done.

Ryan:

Yeah. Yeah.

Julie:

very, very cool. You can take a hilltop hike to go up and take some breathtaking panoramic views of the natural beauty of Antarctica. This is something that can be customized to your comfort level, so you can take it easy or go a little more strenuous. I can imagine that anything hiking on Antarctica would be more strenuous than what I would consider for a regular walk. How about this Ryan, a penguin colony walk, walk along the penguin highway, which is the path that they create when they go to and from the sea. And then you can observe their nesting rituals or watch as they teach their newborn survival skills. What an amazing thing to witness.

Ryan:

I mean, like, I mean, life changing, right? To

Julie:

right,

Ryan:

here watching this.

Julie:

Yeah, and then, of course, some iceberg observations where you can get an up close. Look at a massive towering iceberg from your zodiac. There was also an additional add on. It was basically an intensive kayak adventure. So that was something that you did have to pay extra for, and it was a lot more strenuous. But I mean, kayaking out in the waters in Antarctica that that is just like next level emergent. So cool. All those are things that you can be doing as your excursions. There's also a lot going on on the ship during these days as well. So if it is similar to what you were doing when you were going through the Drake passage, but here, obviously you can do a little bit more wildlife viewing. Just look out from the deck of the ship and look for those penguins orcas, seals the icebergs or the glaciers, you can continue talking with the naturalist because they're going to be doing presentations and workshops. You remember, they're the experts in their field of this and this destination and the wildlife here. There's an Antarctic y deck party, which really sounds perfect for us.

Ryan:

You know that I would be there with an Aloha shirt with icebergs on it.

Julie:

Right? You've got your fitness closets, your spa appointments available. Tea time, music, games, pool parties, Disney trivia contest. Okay, so like maybe a little bit of Mickey. Disney movie night. Okay, maybe a little bit of Mickey, but majority not Mickey. And then day nine, you're passing back through Drake Passage and day, day 10, you're, you're heading out of there. So. I mean, how cool this, this trip really does sound very life changing with all of those excursions that you can do where you're really truly out in the wilderness, right? Think of how quiet it must be up there and, just calm and staring out at that water. I can't imagine.

Ryan:

I love it. Yeah, this is great.
