We've had multiple shows in the past with guests. I've talked about my trips to Aulani. And, I just look back and Our What to Do in Oahu is still one of our top episodes. So, if you're interested in Hawaii travel, go back and take a listen to that. But one of my good friends just went to Aulani, with his family. Spent some time in Honolulu, spent some time at Aulani. And I want to welcome Chris to the podcast. Hey Chris! Hi, Ryan. How are you today? Good. You have been on this podcast many moons ago. I was it was for the National Parks trip that we that's right the National Parks trip and then you also I think you shared a story about your crews out running the the hurricane, I think we, I think we heard that as well. Yeah, absolutely. Well, welcome back. We appreciate you being here. Thank you. I appreciate you asking. So, it's, it's going to be a guys discussion because Julie and her family are away on a fabulous vacation that I'm sure we're going to talk about when she gets back. But she left the reins to us. Oh. That may be, that may be trouble. Who knows what's going to happen. Well, hey folks, before we start talking about the Aloha State, I want to remind you that last week's episode was our second part of our Pacific Coast trip. And you're going to want to hear the second part of this because it was pretty amazing. All right, Chris. We're talking about a trip that happened, I think, last December ish, right? Correct. Yeah, it was early December. Okay, great. I know there was a special reason for the trip. Give us the, key takeaways here. Yeah. It was my family my wife, my two kids. I have a son and a daughter my sister, my mom and my stepdad. Okay. Our main reason for going was it was going to be my mom's 20th marathon. That's running. Yeah. We're always trying to convince her to go to other places to run. So, you know, we can travel behind her. And since we're DVC members staying in a Lonnie was very high on our list. And we'll talk about DVC and what that is here a little bit. So folks that aren't familiar can catch up. We flew in. Early we're about three days early. So my mom could run the marathon go to the convention, pick up bibs and stuff while we were there. I decided that since mom was running, everyone had to run something. So my family my wife and kids I signed them up for the merry mile. So they all had to run a one mile race. I signed up for a 10 K race. And my stepdad signed up for a 10K race as well. Very cool. So, getting to Hawaii has some logistical considerations, especially for you and I coming from the Midwest. I'm up in Indiana, you're down in the Cincinnati area. How did you handle getting to Hawaii from Cincinnati? Yeah. Once we figured out we were going to go we tried to decide where we were going to do our layover. Obviously we don't have any lawn stops from Cincinnati. I'm a little bit of a plane nerd because I, once upon a time, you are very much a plane nerd, so I I wanted to fly on the biggest plane possible. That's a 787, but we unfortunately didn't because of the layovers. We didn't get that one. We flew United. We flew on a triple seven which was nice because with my family, four, we were able to get a wide body, which was a row of four seats. Okay, great. Yeah. Right in the middle there, you were able to all sit together. Yes. So that way we weren't jumping over people trying to get to the bathroom or walk around the plane or anything like that. So we flew from Cincinnati to Denver and then Denver to Honolulu. So it broke it up about four hours. Five hours was our Or split. So you flew into Honolulu and you spent some time in Honolulu. Why don't you talk about The Honolulu portion as far as where you stayed and what some of the highlights were sure so we stayed in Honolulu first because that's where the marathon runs our hotel we stayed at the Hilton Waikiki beach it was two blocks off of Waikiki beach and it was two blocks from the finish line of the race Which is really important for that after race Yeah. Yeah. You're right there. You're not having to figure out how do I get back to my hotel? All that stuff. Exactly. And they have the start and the finish. We're pretty much in the same spot. Nice. So it actually worked out really nicely for us. The hotel was, Nice. It was clean. We had an ocean view, we had a balcony in our room that looked. Straight at Waikiki beach. Beautiful. That was super nice. And at valet for the cars we did rent a car while we were there as well. And you will. And speaking of Hawaii in general, for folks, if you haven't been there, no matter what islands you're at, you're going to need to rent a car. It's just part of it. So think about that when you're thinking about where you're going to stay and what you're going to be spending. Yeah. And we actually had a car for the entire time. I don't necessarily recommend it for the entire time, but. For us, we, we parked it for three days just because of going to the back and forth. The air, my sister arrived. A couple of days after us. So we needed to go pick her up and bring her back. Okay. So out of your group, who had been to Hawaii before and who hadn't? Only my wife and I had been, we had been to Hawaii twice. We had been to Oahu. Twice and the Big Island once. Okay, so your kids hadn't been, your sister, your mom and stepdad, they had not been to Hawaii before. No, none of them had been there before. What a fun family trip. Yes, absolutely. It was funny because everybody was able to do their own thing too. You know, it wasn't, everyone didn't have to do everything together. Julie and I have talked about that on the show too. When you've got a larger family traveling together, it can be a real trap of we need to do everything together at all times, otherwise we're not on vacation together. And boy, that's not the case. Yeah, that is absolutely true. I've stayed in Honolulu a couple times when I've gone to Oahu. It very much feels like I'm in a city because I am. It could be Los Angeles, it could be San Francisco. It's got that kind of California vibe. But talk to us about some of the highlights for you staying in Honolulu. Yeah. So with us, we did a bunch of walking obviously, cause I said, you know, we've LA'd the car. And it was almost, it was nice. Don't get me wrong. I love. Oahu, Waikiki Beach is great, but the hustle and the bustle, there's a lot of it. It doesn't feel, especially when we talk about the second part of your trip, it does not feel like Hawaii, does it? No, it feels like an open air shopping mall. Yeah. Yeah. You know, there's every high end retailer you can think of. Just as you're walking down the street. It's funny that you say that because I think one of the places I recommended to you was Owl Moana Shopping Center, which is the largest open air shopping mall in the world. Yes, we, yeah, we ran around it during our race. Yeah. It was really nice to be able to walk down along the beach, catch the sunsets in the evening, catch the sunrises in the morning since because of the time difference, we were up, you know, at three and four in the morning. So you got to kind of adjust to that as you're going actually one of our first. Favorite spots turned out to be, the a, BC stores love the A BC store. Tell us a little bit about that. So the a b, C store is, is the convenient store of choice. Yeah. It felt like there was one every, it's everywhere. 50 yards probably. You know, it's your food. Your drinks, your pharmacy supplies. You get towels calendars, mugs, you know, and it's not just, and it's not just snack food. They actually, some of them actually have full delis in them where you can get real food. Oh yeah. One of them had a prime rib dinner. So you can get your Hawaii magnet and your prime dinner all in one spot. There you go. I mean, where else would you want to go? Yeah. A little pro tip the next time you travel to Hawaii is if you keep all of your receipts from the ABC stores You can trade those in once you accumulate a certain amount and get a little thank you gift. Yes, and you will be surprised how fast that adds up. Especially when you have friends from home having you buy them Kona distillery rum, right? Exactly. Exactly. That put, that put us over the limit for the beach. Nice. Well, I'm glad I could be helpful to you. Yeah, absolutely. So now we're going to transition to the Alani portion of the trip, but I want to talk, you mentioned DVC at the beginning and you and I are both DVC or Disney Vacation Club members. We have not talked about this on the show. Just give kind of the bullet points of what DVC allows you to do, Chris. So DVC allows us to stay deluxe at Disney World, Disneyland. Alani at a moderate price. Yeah, absolutely. It is timeshare like I always hesitate to say timeshare because it is unlike any other timeshare system. One, it puts you in ultimate control. And two, it has ultimate resale value. In fact, I just sold some of my contracts and was able to make a really good amount of money off of it. So it's not that, it's not that scammy timeshare situation, is it? No, definitely isn't. And you know, it's one of those things. If you're not going to use it, you can always rent your points or, you know, if renting never doesn't seem to work out, then you can always get, sell your contract. I don't foresee us doing that right now. Yeah, right. We definitely like the, the ability to stay at the deluxe resorts. Yep. And so the benefit of using your DVC points at Aulani is obviously you prepaid for your accommodations. You have included parking, which Chris mentioned having a rental car. I always tell people if they're not DVC members, if they're staying at Alani, get a car for a couple of days and use it and then return it. So you're not paying for parking to have a car just sitting there while you're. Enjoying the resort and there's also some perks some different things while you're on property that chris may talk about a little bit later but obviously first and foremost it allows you to stay at this really nice resort for drastically less money so let's talk about elani. First of all, you talked about the hustle and bustle of onolulu And that is on the east side of the island if you're traveling along the south of the island You And you go to the western side, that's where Alani is, kind of the drier side. Talk about the location of Alani and Kholina. Does it differ at all from Honolulu? It's a drastic difference. It's like night and day. I mean, there's just no comparison. You go from, hustle and the bustle, the cars, the traffic, the people walking around, the restaurants, all of that stuff to driving through a gate, I guess it's a gated community. It is technically, it's not a closed gated community, but there is technically a gate there and it's, it's, it is definitely its own place. It's essentially a Gulf condo community with resorts. And so it has a very, very different low key feel. There's a nice Marina at one side of Colina. It's just, it's, it's awesome. I love it. Yeah, I just, it is so. Uber relaxing to me to be in Colina. Oh yeah. I mean, the landscaping is all manicured the grass. I mean, it's a very stark difference from the beach. And, and for those of you who are not interested in staying at a Disney resort, but would like to stay at Colina, there is a four seasons there. There's a Marriott vacation club and there's several other large resorts there. So you can stay there and not stay at Ohlone. The one thing I will say when I have clients that I work with that go to Ohlone, Chris, is I always talk to them about the water because you've got the, the big waves of Waikiki and the big waves of the North shore. Kowloon is very different, isn't it? Oh, very much. It seems like each one of the resorts, the Four Seasons, the Marriott and Alani, they all have little coves that are carved out. So you can walk out to the edge of the cove where you can see some of the waves that crash, but then the coves themselves are very calm and it makes It makes it really nice for some snorkeling or paddleboarding. And for families, or just to be able to relax in the water, absolutely. Alright, so my family has been to Aulani multiple times. I said this in the intro, it is literally one of my favorite places to vacation ever, and I can't wait to go back. Your family's going there for the first time. You're a Disney family, so you're excited about this. Tell us about your first impressions of Aulani. First impressions were this is the most beautiful Disney resort we had ever been to bar none But absolutely, I mean just walking into the lobby Which is it's a nice grand lobby, but then walking through the lobby on to their outdoor patio and just Seeing the resort, you're immediately hit with the resort, the lazy river, the pool area. It is all right in your face. Right there. And it really was. It was amazing. It was, it was one of the top resorts that I've ever been to. Great. I'm glad to hear that. That does not surprise me at all, but I'm glad that you had that experience. And I will tell you, Chris, is there any better smell? Then the lobby area or walking out into the front part of Alani. It is just amazing. Isn't it? There is not. And we, we may or may not have a a candle that smells like the lobby. All right, so obviously staying there on Disney Vacation Club, you had a little bit of different accommodations than you would if you just stayed in a regular hotel room. Now, people can book these accommodations too, but Chris, what's another advantage of staying DVC? You have access to some really great ways to stay. Yes, and you know, it's it's nice. Alani. offers you to DVC members. They offer you a studio, a one bedroom and a two bedroom accommodation with the one bedroom and two bedroom having full kitchens and laundry. So the resort itself has four towers, three of the towers are villas. DVC villas. One of the towers is a cash tower. And those rooms Which means regular hotel rooms. Correct. Yes. But those rooms do not have efficiencies, right? Even the one bedroom and two bedroom that are in that tower. They don't, they do not have kitchens. They're kind of suites. Yeah, basically. Yeah, yeah. And you also didn't mention the place I'm going to live sometime, which is the three bedroom. Oh how could I forget that one? Which, which I think I still dream about staying in that three bedroom villa. We toured that on your recommendation. And yeah, that was an amazing, yeah. Amazing at the end. It's at the end of the building. Ocean front. Just flat out. I will say though, the way that they're positioned at the end of the buildings are really nice because they're the only direct ocean view options. Yes, correct. Yes. But. Some poor people are going to be spending either a lot of vacation points or a lot of money, and they're going to be directly over the kids club. Or the restaurant. I would, I would pitch, I'm a pretty easy going hotel guest. You know, I like to treat the staff. Well, I'm pretty go with the flow. I would be vivid. It wouldn't be nice. I will, I will tell you that. Yes. Well, and obviously with one with your size of group, but also to, you know, just when you're at the resort, because of food costs, and also just convenience, having that kitchen, where you can have breakfast and snacks and even a meal a day taken care of if you want to do it that way. Having laundry for everybody. Having a huge balcony. Because all the balconies for the bedrooms and the main area are connected. It's a really nice way to spend your time at Awani. Yeah, it is. It is. We stayed in a two bedroom and we stayed on the side that we had a small ocean view. If you peek through the trees a little bit over on the loo where we could see the luau through the trees. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. So it worked great for our family size. Again, with the kitchen, we, we went to Costco. Yeah. And, and so for those of you that are thinking about going to Alani, when you leave Honolulu, you're passing multiple grocery stores. Target an outlet mall, Costco so you really can stock up. And that stuff is pretty close to leave the resort and go to. Yeah, and I'll tell you, you know, we, we got to Ilani and we had plans to explore some of the island more. And we did one day of exploring. And after that, we didn't leave because I couldn't leave. I felt bad leaving because it was so nice and relaxing. I know. I know. Absolutely. I get it. What were some of the resort activities that your family really enjoyed? Yeah, so we really enjoyed the Lazy River, I mean, multiple times. It's the best Lazy River ever. They've actually sped it up, believe it or not. When my parents went with me one year, my dad timed it, and it actually took 20 minutes to go around the Lazy River. Wow. Yeah, it was amazing. I loved it. It was great. You know, they have a water slide. They have the water slide right there that, that it dumps into the lazy river. They have the pools they have a quiet pool. They have a main pool. They have the core reef where you can do some snorkeling right there right inside, with fish and, and yeah, absolutely. And then you can also snorkel out in the Cove. We never really had an issue with getting a lounge chair on the beach. No, I think as long as you are on it, you don't have to stress about it. You can always find a good home based if you will at the pools or on the beach. Oh, definitely. So is your family a beach family or a pool family? Pool. We're gonna go about a 60 40 pool. Yeah, I would say I'm the same way. I always start at the pool and then maybe hit the beach later in the day. Yeah, my wife's not a big sand Person, you know. Gotcha. Gets everywhere. Gotcha. But my sister, she's from Virginia Beach, so she's used to the beach. We're definitely, pool people and then, we also like to just relax a little bit by the water and Yeah, in the sand. So resort wise, Chris, what made Alani. special in what they offered or that you saw differently compared to other resorts? It was just the atmosphere and the environment that they've created there that just It's just relaxing. Yeah, and there's no there's nothing I love going to Disney World, but there's there's too much It's you're always moving. We're here. You don't have to move everything you need there. There's restaurants if you want to go to your room to get your stuff from you know that you had pre purchased or what have you? Everything you need is right there. And if you really, really, really had to get something, you can always go across the street. There's an ABC store. Yeah. So, so literally a five minute walk from the resort. You've got a shopping center with an ABC store with some really nice stores for souvenirs with restaurants. So if you really wanted to go to Colina and just stay there, you absolutely could. Absolutely. Absolutely. I mean, we had excursions and things like that booked and we ended up canceling them because we didn't see the need to, to go anywhere. Our one day of excursions we did go to the North shore. Very good. Absolutely. We went to the North shore. We, we went to Wyoming Valley and swam. Yep. So there's a botanical gardens that you walk through and you walk all the way back to a waterfall that's included. You can get in and swim up with a waterfall. That's a, that's a must do. I think every time I go, even though I've been there multiple times. Yeah, we were really excited. There was a sort of vans. Master pipeline. That's right. We were so excited. We were going to get to see it. The day that we drove up happened to be the day that the waves just didn't pan out. They cancelled it for the day, but that's okay. We hung out at the beach. And for those of you that don't know, December in Hawaii is when the waves are at their peak, usually. So the North Shore is famous for surfing, and it's very famous for surfing that time of the year. Yes, we, we were at, we were at the Bonsai Pipeline and, we went into the water, but we, we didn't go all the way. Like, seriously, you have to be careful, right? Oh, absolutely, absolutely. It's a different type of water than what you're used to, even going to the beach. Yes, yeah. It was, it was great. It was, it was a really nice day capped off with dinner at the shrimp truck. Love it. Love, perfect. It's almost perfect. Throw some Masamoto shave ice in there, and you are good to go, my friend, when it comes to the North Shore. Definitely. So, let's talk about food, then. You mentioned the shrimp truck. Did you go to Giovanni's? Is that what I remember? We did go to Giovanni's. Yes. All right. So that, that's my shrimp truck of choice, but there's a lot of different options up there. But let's talk about some of your favorite food highlights across the trip. So this could be Adelani, this could be Honolulu, this could be Oahu. What were the things that you remember there? Yeah. Before we left for the trip, I had been, doing some research and YouTubing. I had a nice little list. Chris is a foodie. Chris is a foodie. I had a nice little list of food that I wanted to find. We didn't get everywhere, but that's okay. Cause that's why you get to go back. Yes. You know, we went to the Moana Surf Rider Hotel there in Waikiki Beach. We had the breakfast buffet. Okay. And my kids both. Rated it the, the best breakfast in Hawaii anywhere? Always awesome. Ever. Awesome. 10 stars. 10 stars. Alright. 10 stars. They each gave them five. So gave it five. So it's a 10 star. Yes. Yes. We found a really fun Asian food hall right there at Waikiki Beach. We enjoy noodles and dumplings, so that was. Right up our alley. We had Spam Musubi, which is. Awesome, and I've even made it since we've been home. Yeah, so Chris actually came home and ordered a Musubi making kit which I actually have in my amazon cart. It's just kind of sitting there teasing me So, when I get enough stuff i'll throw it in someday So musubi for those of you that don't know it is sushi rice with a piece of spam that's usually cooked with like some teriyaki sauce And then it's put on the sushi rice Wrapped up in seaweed. So it's kind of a brick of yumminess, isn't it? And this is like the universal snack in Hawaii. Yeah. I mean, it is, you combine, but all the ABC stores you pick it up, you take it, if you're at the beach or what have you, I mean, it's a great little snack, a little pick me up as you're, as you're walking around. Agreed. Let's see some of the other places we ate dinner at the monkey pod over in Coalina. Okay, so that's a restaurant that is across the street from Aulani. I've been there. I highly recommend it. I know you're gonna talk about the My Tai and the Happy Hour. Those are, yeah, my ties about Monkey Pod. My ties are where it's at. If not the best, my ties you'll ever have. It's an amazing My tie Yes, very, very much so. And the reason I mention Happy Hour is they have a really good happy hour special when you're kind of still riding on East Coast time. That that's a really good dinner time for you. Are you gonna talk about the luau? I can. One of the other fun things that we did was at Alani, it's all you can eat. All you can drink with I think it's about a three hour show it's amazing. I've been multiple times. I've been to other luau's on Oahu and I keep coming back to Aulani's. Now, there's a few Disney touches. But it's not over your head, Disney. It's much more. And I would say that in general about Aulani the resort. Disney is there, but Disney is not in your face, like going to Walt Disney World or Disneyland. It's very much more a Hawaiian resort. With Disney touches. Absolutely. Absolutely. You know, there are character meet and greets, but they're, they're off to the side, or, they're in the, courtyard where the luau takes place, where they're not, it's not in your face. If you want to seek it out, it's there. Yeah. If not, then you don't, you, you, maybe you don't even notice. So food good at the, at the luau was the luau presentation. Good. The food at the luau was really good. The kids even went back for seconds and that never happens. The drinks were good. The, the show was informative and educational and it was, it was a really good show. And yeah I, I highly recommend it. If I remember right before you went, you were trying to decide if you were even going to spend the money to go to the Aulani Wua or not, because it's, it's more expensive than others. I pushed you and I said, Chris, you're not going to regret going to this with your family. What do you think about that? Was that the right call? Or do you wish you would have done something else? No, I think it was the right call. I, you know, after we, we did, we, we researched, we looked there were other resorts, even within walking distance that had luaus. And we chose to stay at Alani. It was a little bit more expensive than the others, but what you got for what you paid definitely equaled out to a really good experience. Very good. Couldn't agree more, and I'm glad that I was there to push you to do it. Yes, and the The front of the line trick that you have is is wonderful. All right, all right. I'll save that for my clients who want to go to Aulani and let them know, what they need to do to get the best seats. Exactly. So, Chris, anything else with your trip to Hawaii that you want to highlight? Either with Aulani, the resort, or with your time in Hawaii in general. So I, I definitely recommend when you're there, obviously see Waikiki where you're there. Yep. If it's, even if it's for a day, take the time, experience it, see it. Going to Pearl Harbor, which we didn't talk much about, but it is a must for everyone. Yes, I was there once, I'm glad I went, and I certainly recommend it to folks. If you have a connection to the military, you can really, really spend some in depth time there and get a really immersive experience. Absolutely. It is definitely One of those must sees while you're there. Going to the North shore, whether you're there in the summer or whether you're there in the winter, obviously get up there, see the waves, experience the surf culture while you're there. There's plenty of little restaurants and little towns along the way for you to experience even the Hawaiian culture while you're there. So as we wrap up here, Chris, any future plans with either Hawaii in general or Aulani Resort? Will your family be back? I definitely think we'll be back. I don't, I'm not sure how long.
