Julie:

Hello and welcome to all things travel. We all know that Walt Disney World can be an amazing vacation destination. However, there are so many enchanting extras to add to your Disney vacation to make it even more magical. Today, we're going to talk about some of our favorites that you should consider on your next trip. Listen in with travel advisors and destination experts Ryan and Julie. He is your travel professor teaching you everything you need to know to have a magical vacation. And I am a Disney loving Maryland mom of three and a specialist in family travel. Whether we're discussing incredible destinations, top vacation tips, or sharing personal stories, it's always all things travel.

Ryan:

Julie, you sound a little stuffed up, maybe a little tired today while we're recording. There's a good reason why, isn't there?

Julie:

There is. So, I just got back from beaches Turks and Caicos late last night. We probably got back around 11 p. m. It was a super long travel day.

Ryan:

Sounded like an insane travel day I I know we're gonna talk about this in future episodes But just give people kind of the high level what happened to you yesterday to make the day a crazy travel day

Julie:

Oh, man. Well, first of all, so I've never flown out of an airport that small before in my life. The airport in Turks and Caicos and Providenciales is, is very small. Like, very small. And as you may know that when you're at these smaller islands, you board right off the tarmac. So, It's not like it is when you're at the big airports in the U. S. But essentially we got there, it's completely open air, and it was a hot day in Turks and Caicos

Ryan:

little humid a little muggy

Julie:

Yeah, we needed a shower within like the first five minutes of being in this airport. The communication is, is pretty lacking about what line, like there's four different lines for American Airlines and there's no signage about which one you should be in. It's just like one guy telling you which line to go to. So you have no idea where you're going. There's like no restrooms, really. There's just like one. There's like no places to eat, nothing like that. The line for security was well over an hour. And again, you're outside. Well over an hour. fortunately, but also unfortunately with my three kids, we got pulled up, to go to the inside portion to go through security faster because they were pulling a bunch of the babies up saying it was just too hot, which it was. You finally get through security, you're like, oh great, and then they're like, go to gate three. Well, gate three, I mean, there's like eight gates, and then there's just like three single doors that you walk through for those gates to go outside. There is no gate. It's not like the terminals. It's literally one big room, and this room is probably like the size of my house. Like, it's not a big room. you're just like sardined in there, and you just stand there until they start boarding your plane, and you can barely hear them calling you. Like It's, it's just, it just felt like pure madness.

Ryan:

Ha

Julie:

usually, you know, you get there, then you're sitting in the chair, you're resting, you're lounging, you get your coffee, your kids are running around. No, none of this. You're just standing there with all your luggage, just dripping. And then my husband got called for a random security screen, but again, you can barely hear the loudspeaker. So he like goes up there. They screen him, he's obviously clear to go, and they try to board him on the plane. He's got our passports, they don't want to let him back to us. Again, the communication was challenging. Yeah, it was a day. And we were delayed by an hour, over an hour on the plane.

Ryan:

Jeez.

Julie:

two reasons. One, because there was someone traveling solo who needed extra assistance and continued to use the bathroom over and over again. So we were literally delayed for that. And the second, because the plane behind us broke down. So,

Ryan:

couldn't back up. You Ha ha, at the end you're just like, what is happening? Like we are in some like travel bizarro world here.

Julie:

it's just, like I said to Stephen, it's just so crazy coming from like this great, beautiful, luxurious resort. And then this is the experience when you leave. It was just crazy. I was like, what is going on? But anyways, so I can't wait to share more about Beaches, Tarks, and Caicos with everyone. I mean, the resort is phenomenal. You just need to prepare yourself for when you leave.

Ryan:

What you can say. I am definitely not at beaches anymore. Now I am having an island airport experience.

Julie:

maybe the answer is that you don't fly on a Saturday because Saturday is the day that has the majority of the non stop flights. So maybe if you're flying on a different day, that's not a problem. I don't know. Someone can test out that theory

Ryan:

Okay. All right. So today Julie We're gonna talk about enchanting extras when you go to Disney and there are tons. When you go to Walt Disney World either with your family or with Steven for an adult's trip Do you usually add one of the enchanting extras to your trip?

Julie:

It depends. We typically add at least one to every trip, and it just depends on what our goals are for that trip. And if it's a special occasion, and some of those special occasion enchanting extras, you'll talk about later on.

Ryan:

My kids are going for the first time for quite a while with me this summer and we're getting close to that 60 day mark. So I, may start talking about things like dessert parties or, special things that we can add on as well as our dinners. First and foremost, there are so many, what Disney calls enchanting extras and if you've listened to the episodes for a while and you go back to some recent episodes about how to use your resort day Maybe the adults trip to disney you're gonna hear A lot of different ideas that we're going to talk about some today and then a lot more that maybe you're not as familiar with

Julie:

if you missed last week's episode and you've ever heard the term Luxpedition, or especially if you haven't heard it, make sure you go back and listen as we explain what Luxpedition travel is and how you can access it. Mm

Ryan:

So Julie as people are booking their dining, as they're thinking about their park days they can actually go on the app or they can go on the website and look at what Disney calls enchanting extras. And these are all the extra activities. That they can do while they're there. Pretty easy to book. You can book them just like a meal or anything like that. Usually it's at 60 days, right?

Julie:

It is usually 60 days. When we say 60 days, that means 60 days before your vacation. And that is when your advanced dining reservations open up. So these enchanting extras tend to open on the same day. However, your dining reservations typically open at 6 a. m. These enchanting extras typically open at midnight,

Ryan:

Yes

Julie:

is not like, written anywhere. You just kind of have to know that. And

Ryan:

if there's ones that you're really particular about, hey, my kids have to get Bippity Boppity Boutique. We need to go to the, fireworks dessert party on this day. Utilize that that time period of midnight. Absolutely.

Julie:

yeah, and it's, it's definitely frustrating to be like, Oh, I have to be on here at midnight and then again at 6am. But it's just one day. It's just one night and the experience you'll have on your trip will be absolutely worth it. I had this exact situation recently where I was up at midnight booking tours for clients. and the same client the next morning at 6am booking her dining, but we got everything and they're going to have an amazing vacation. A lot of these you do pay for in advance, but they are refundable.

Ryan:

Yep, some are not, some are, so please make sure you read the fine print. Alright, Julie, so let's talk about some that we like, and we're going to break these up in several different ways. In the parks, we're visiting the parks at Disney, what are a couple that we really like?

Julie:

love the tours. There are so many tours you can do that if you've been to one of the theme parks a lot and you're like, you know, I've done everything here. There's, I'm not interested in anything else here. Thinking that you've done it all booking a tour is an amazing way to enhance your experience and your knowledge. So some of them are very interactive tours like the Wild Africa Trek at Animal Kingdom. If you're on the safari ride, you can typically see people doing the Wild Africa Trek and it's very cool. They get up close with the animals. It's amazing. Or you can do the Starlight Safari, which is over at The Lodge, I believe, but similar idea. A more up close, there's a lot that get you up close with the animals over at Animal Kingdom Park and Lodge.

Ryan:

Many years ago. We did the caring for Giants

Julie:

Oh wow.

Ryan:

up close with the elephants and that was really neat for the kids to learn about elephants to see them up close and also learn about Disney's conservation. Yeah.

Julie:

And a lot of those tours are not like an all day

Ryan:

No, no, a couple hours. Again, another example that I've done in the past is behind the seeds over at Epcot. It's just a couple hours. It gives you kind of a taste pun intended, I guess, of, what they're growing over there, what they're doing the background of, Disney horticulture. But one tour that is very in depth, Julie, which one is that?

Julie:

Keys to the kingdom.

Ryan:

to the Kingdom. I cannot wait till my son is old enough to do this tour

Julie:

Oh, we've done it. It is very cool. The keys to the kingdom tour is the tour that you want to do if you want to learn more about Disney facts, Disney history, and behind the scenes at the Magic Kingdom. A lot of people talk about going down into the Utilidors, which is what is underneath of the Magic Kingdom. If you didn't know, the Magic Kingdom is on the second level, and underneath of it is a bunch of tunnels and walkways connecting different areas of the park. That's where the cast members go.

Ryan:

And the reason I said, I have to wait for my son to be 16 is because it's behind the scenes, because it shows you behind the magic, if you will, they're really kind of careful in who they allow to be on the tour. So they don't want children to be on the tours because they want to keep that magic alive.

Julie:

Correct. And I believe it's also this tour, you go behind the scenes on a couple attractions you have lunch. It's a really lovely day. I think it's like five hours, I want to say. It doesn't feel like it, though. You're learning so much about the history of the park, about how the park works. It's so cool, but it fills up quickly.

Ryan:

it really does. Now, to ratchet it up even more, if you are an extreme Disney lover who wants to maximize their day, you have to think about this Enchanting Extra, and that's getting a VIP tour.

Julie:

Mm hmm.

Ryan:

You see these folks all over the parks, with their plaid vest or plaid dress hosts. These people are getting, Excellent expedited service on pretty much anything that they want to do. I've had clients do this before. They will meet you at the parks or they'll pick you up at your resort. They'll take you to whatever parks you want to go to. You can ride any rides you want in an expedited way. This is really the way to go if you are a Disney lover who wants to maximize their day, isn't it?

Julie:

Yeah, I would love to do that one day

Ryan:

yep. Now, I will say the pricing on some of this stuff changes, so we're not really mentioning pricing. Because that stuff changes, availability changes. So obviously go back to that enchanting extras, the, VIP tours, I will say you have the ability to make it as long as you want, but there is a minimum of seven hours. So this is a time commitment for the day. And you're paying a lot of money, Julie. And I always chuckle when it's like, and you have to buy the park ticket.

Julie:

I know. I know. A lot of what we've talked about are tours that kind of get you around the park, but there are a lot of really great enchanting extras that are much more hands on. So, one of the most popular ones that I get requests for is Bippity Boppity

Ryan:

Absolutely.

Julie:

in the Magic Kingdom at Cinderella's Castle. There used to be two other locations for Bippity Boppity Boutique, but we have not seen those reopened yet. We don't know anything about that, but if you don't know what it is, Bippity Boppity Boutique is the experience for kids. It can be for boys or for girls where they go in and they get made into a prince or a princess. And it is just such a very cool experience. It's about an hour and a half to two hours, you pick out your outfit you go through a little ceremony You are at the salon. It's a very very cool experience. And then obviously you're wearing that outfit The rest of the day or however, you want to do it.

Ryan:

So it's good to partner with, Lunch or breakfast with Cinderella. It's good to Pair with capture the moment Photo packages, which is another thing you can do in each of the parks is you can have a private photo session

Julie:

Mm hmm

Ryan:

That I've done this before Julie and It's 30 minutes long, which seems really really short But let me tell you you get tons of photos and really good photos in that time

Julie:

Yeah, and you can also do that outside the park. I've had people do it at the resorts before as well Which is a cool way to do

Ryan:

And I will say, because these are timed, those capture the moments really do fill up too. So that's one, if you want to do that for your family, you want to get on top of that as soon as it comes out. What else in the parks, Julie?

Julie:

So, over at Hollywood Studios, the very popular options are at Savi's Workshop, which is where you build your lightsaber, and the Droid Depot, where you can build your droid. These are really, really popular for kids and adults who just love Star Wars. We have not done either of these, have you?

Ryan:

I've done both. Yep. Well, I built a droid and then I went with my son when he made a lightsaber.

Julie:

Okay, so tell us a little about it. Okay.

Ryan:

The droid, I would say for smaller children, the droid is better. Because it's a little more interactive, you're getting to choose the pieces, you're getting to put it together. And it's a little more stimulating, I guess, than the lightsaber. With both of these activities. You can have a guest. So if you have a family of 4, you can have 2 people build and 2 people that are there. So that's 1 thing too. You don't have to be left out with the lightsaber. It's very much a show. And building the lightsaber. So that is really cool. I would say it's better for bigger kids or dads that want to kind of live in that star wars moment. They really kind of play up to that really really cool experience. Both of them are

Julie:

That's awesome. I and are those things Ryan that you were able to easily travel home with like what did that look like?

Ryan:

Yep, so

Julie:

that's the question I get a lot is what do I do with it in the park and and

Ryan:

So a couple things you can either have Disney ship at home for you. There is a cost to that So you don't have to worry about it, or you can take it home. Both are TSA friendly both would be carry on. So that is one thing to consider, you know based on your luggage going home if you have a big droid in a box, that's gonna be a carry on and the same with the lightsaber They give you a bag for the lightsaber to go into but they would count as a carry on But no, no problem with either. Very easy to

Julie:

I want to mention one other tour for sure that is very unusual and it's over at Epcot and it's going the, you can go dive in the, you know, in the aquarium at the

Ryan:

cool is that?

Julie:

I've had a couple of friends who do this one as like birthday celebrations, birthday gifts because it's just a very, very unique experience to go and dive at Epcot.

Ryan:

Yeah, absolutely. And you've seen folks do this, right? When you're there at the aquarium and they're diving. And sometimes they're cast members who are working, but sometimes you can tell it's a tour going on and Epcot has one of the largest aquariums in the world. To be able to dive in that, it's a really unique experience.

Julie:

Yeah. Super cool. Anything else you want to highlight inside the park, Ryan?

Ryan:

Not quite yet. I think we're going to talk about a few, maybe at the end that I want to, that I want to highlight. What about outside the park?

Julie:

The biggest one that comes to mind to me is golfing, whether that is on a big 18 hole professional type golf course, or mini golfing. So, the mini golfing, if you book a vacation package through the Walt Disney World Travel Company, you get mini golf included for, what is it, one round of mini golf? I think there is some stipulations as far as what time you can go. It might

Ryan:

you have to do it like before 4 p.

Julie:

yeah. But that's great because you don't even have to pay for that add on. That's the biggest thing that comes to my mind is golf. And again, though, the mini golf, you don't have to book in advance, but if you want like a golf tee time, you do need to book that in advance.

Ryan:

And they do have foot golf that you can also, that you can also book in advance and do. One thing outside the park that I'm really excited to try sometime is going to Drawn to Life. Which is a Cirque du Soleil show at Disney Springs. I really like Cirque du Soleil. I've seen them several times around the country. It's a lot of fun. I'm a theater guy I love circusy stuff And so it really it's really cool. And and obviously this show has a Disney nod So that's something you can book in that enchanting extras as well and be good obviously to pair that with a brunch at Disney Springs or an early dinner or something like that

Julie:

Yeah. What other enchanting extra is available over at Disney Springs that we like?

Ryan:

I another thing that I really like, and I've talked a little bit about this is over Anne Moret's patisserie, which is the fancy cakes and cookies and things julie, you can actually take a decorating class. How fun is that? Where you can learn to make the little Mickey cookies and learn to decorate those little beautiful cakes I love that Disney with a lot of these activities. have kind of a learning aspect to them where you can come away with a new skill or at least an appreciation for something.

Julie:

What is their word? Edutainment.

Ryan:

Edutainment. I don't know if it's their word, but that's certainly what it is.

Julie:

If I am personally going to pick an Enchanting Extra outside the park, I am 100 percent going to the spa at the Grand Floridian.

Ryan:

So which resorts have spas, Julie?

Julie:

There's a lot, but are they all open?

Ryan:

I'm not sure. So, so again, that's why,

Julie:

the Grand Floridian is open.

Ryan:

for people to check their resort or check online.

Julie:

because a lot of them say, disney's resort and spa but the spa portion is not open I know grand floridian is open but like saratoga springs has a spa wilderness lodge has a small spa beach club has one there's plenty of them around. I just don't think that they're all open

Ryan:

there's definitely options. If you're wanting a spa day there's definitely things you can do there. Ha,

Julie:

exactly. But the Grand Floridian one I'm sure is the nicest, so that's where I am going.

Ryan:

The last one we're going to talk about is super unique. Over at Fort Wilderness, there is actually a horse stable where all of the horses that work on Disney property live. And one of the things you can do is you can go over there and you can not only see the horses, see the barns, that's complimentary, but you can actually get pony rides, Julie, or you could do trail riding with the horses. How fun is that?

Julie:

I think that's really cool. And I think that's really great for, people who just really want to break from the parks it's a very different side of Disney. And it's also very cool to me because it's a very nostalgic and historical part of Disney. When you go back and look at the maps of the initial drawings for Walt Disney World, there is always a campground on there.

Ryan:

Yeah,

Julie:

The ranch is always on there, so it's, it's obviously something that Walt wanted to have in Walt Disney World. So I, just think that's a really cool portion of it.

Ryan:

absolutely. So hey, we've got a couple ideas for special celebrations or special milestones, and we're also going to talk about some of our favorites. But first Julie, I've got a really exciting where in the world is all things travel.

Julie:

Okay.

Ryan:

So, when I went back to the stats this past week, a new location for us that popped up is Newcastle upon Tyne, otherwise known as Newcastle in the UK. How cool is that?

Julie:

I like that.

Ryan:

it is England's northernmost metropolitan borough, located on the River Tyne's northern bank, Newcastle upon Tyne. So we are excited that Newcastle is listening to all things travel and as I went back and I looked at things to do In Newcastle, there were a lot of things. There were obviously castles. There were old buildings There was a great football stadium to go see but one thing that popped out to me is the biscuit factory and

Julie:

course it did.

Ryan:

this sounds like me and it has nothing to do with biscuits. Okay, so And we know that in the UK, biscuits are cookies, but the Biscuit Factory is the UK's largest independent commercial art, craft, and design gallery set in the heart of Newcastle's Cultural Quarter. Housed in a former Victorian warehouse, the beautiful gallery spaces are set over two floors and display a range of exciting contemporary fine art, sculpture, original prints, jewellery, and quality craftsmanship. Now see, it's not all about food, is it?

Julie:

I love that. That sounds wonderful.

Ryan:

so hey, Newcastle, we are so excited that you're listening to All Things Travel. Please reach out to Julie or I. You can do that on Facebook. You can do that via email. I would love to send a little thank you gift all the way to the northern part of the UK.

Julie:

Very cool.

Ryan:

Alright, so one of the things, Julie, that these Enchanting Extras allow us to do is celebrate special milestones in our family or our group's lives. What's a good example of this that Disney offers?

Julie:

I like to recommend is a fireworks party.

Ryan:

It's, it's kind of the gold standard, isn't it, when it

Julie:

It is the

Ryan:

an Enchanting Extra?

Julie:

It is. And that is kind of like the first one a lot of people think of. I've done a fireworks party with our family and we did it as a gift to my parents and my in laws when they came for my daughter's first trip a couple years ago. She wasn't going to be awake for the fireworks. She was sleeping with her little headphones on, but the rest of us got to enjoy them and that's probably the last time I really enjoyed the fireworks.

Ryan:

Ha ha ha ha ha!

Julie:

You know, my kids don't like them, we've done multiple fireworks parties with our agency over at Epcot. So they do do them at multiple parks and they also do them from some other really cool locations that Ryan can tell us about.

Ryan:

Yeah, so one of the most special Enchanting Extras that I had a family do they really wanted to do a dessert party on a big ferry boat that goes out on the river. You have desserts, you have drinks and you have fireworks. That unfortunately, was not available when I called in to make that arrangement. But the cast member I talked to said, well, with the number of people they have, why don't they rent their own boat? And this wasn't a boat like you have during the day where you go out and drive it around. This was actually a captain picking them up. I believe it was at grand floridian and it was a pontoon boat The captain was there they had snacks they had drinks, but they were also allowed to bring whatever they wanted So if they had special, drinks for the night snacks for the night They were also able to decorate it for the mom's birthday. It was a grandma that was coming along So they were able to decorate it with happy birthday stuff and the captain took them out They had an evening out on the water Then they were in a fantastic spot to see the fireworks at Magic Kingdom The pictures they sent me were amazing and they just could not stop raving about this private experience for, I believe it was five of them. The boats hold up to 10. So it really can, depending on your size of group, be a very cost effective way to have a private experience. I keep it in my back pocket now for folks that are doing special celebrations because it's fun.

Julie:

That's very cool. I've definitely seen some of those boats, decorated and ready to go over at the marina at the Polynesian or the Grand. That's kind of where they typically launch from, but very, very even if you're not going to go out on the water, there's also an option, I believe it's still there, to book Celebration at the Top, which is at the top of the Contemporary. Not private viewing, but, You're out of the park and out of all that craziness and a little more intimate experience for the

Ryan:

and Julie, you and I at one of our agency dinners watched the fireworks from the Top of Contemporary last year, and that was pretty special, wasn't it? It's a good way to see the fireworks.

Julie:

it is a great way to see the fireworks. I agree.

Ryan:

So, a special milestone that I never did when my kids were little but I've had clients wanting to do this and it's always a really special experience for them is booking the first haircut at the harmony barber shop on main street

Julie:

That would be so sweet.

Ryan:

So it's amazing these little kiddos have their appointment where they get their first haircut right on main street as part of it. They get a little certificate They get a lock of their hair You They get little ears that say First Haircut on them. I mean, how special?

Julie:

I feel like every other haircut after that is just downhill,

Ryan:

ha! Now, you can just do a regular haircut there. So, who knows? Maybe that should be an All Things Travel exclusive content or something. In January, when we're there, I should go get my haircut and you can film it.

Julie:

I don't think anyone wants that

Ryan:

And then can get special ears that say, like, Ryan's 10, 074 haircut or something instead of my first haircut

Julie:

I don't think that would draw anyone listen to the show.

Ryan:

Things julie for special celebrations or milestones

Julie:

Not really. A lot of the ones that we covered are, great for any sort of birthday or anything like that, buying a tour or experiencing a tour with somebody or, for your kid's birthday, those Star Wars experiences are very cool, any of these could be a great addition.

Ryan:

And let me put in a plug here, too if you have a family Member that's going to Disney and you want to help with their trip in some way I have had folks reach out and Sponsor something so, you know unbeknownst to the family that's traveling Grandma has purchased a dessert party and that's a really neat thing to do

Julie:

Yeah, I've had clients do that the other way around. The kids bought it for the parents as a, gift. That's an easy way to like plus up and, show someone you're thinking about them and you're thankful for what they've done for you. Something like that. It's a great gift to give.

Ryan:

So Julie for your next trip, are you planning on adding any of these

Julie:

You know, Ryan, I don't even know when my next Disney trip is. Oh, so I don't know, but I will say Mia is a little over one right now when we're recording. When she's three, you have to know that we will be at Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique.

Ryan:

Love it. Love it. So, on the other end of the spectrum, I have teenagers, right? And my daughter just graduated from high school. So, when we go this summer, the three of us, I'm really planning on, as long as the kids want to do this you know, how teenagers sometimes are.

Julie:

hmm.

Ryan:

I would really like to schedule a Capture the Moment session in whichever part she chooses and then buy her some of those graduation ears and get some good shots of me and the kids because Disney's been such an amazing part of our life. Get some shots of us at this stage while we're

Julie:

so cool. Wow. Right. A lot of people they like to do like yearly photos or, seasonal photos, so why not swap out one of those experiences for one at Disney? I mean, how cool is that?

Ryan:

Absolutely. Or
