Aloha and welcome to All Things Travel. as listeners know, Julie's family just returned from a trip to Disneyland and Aulani, a Disney resort and spa on Oahu. Today we'll discuss the second part of that trip by talking about all things Aulani and Oahu in Hawaii. Listen in with travel advisors and destination experts Ryan and Julie. I'm your travel professor, teaching you everything you need to know to have a magical vacation. And she's a Disney loving, Maryland mom of three, and a specialist in family travel. Whether we're discussing incredible destinations, top vacation tips, or sharing personal stories, it's always all things travel. What's one image that comes to mind when you think about hawaii?

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Hawaii in general or Aulani? Or both?

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Let's do both

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Okay, so Hawaii in general, the mountains for sure. I was just not prepared for how breathtaking that view

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

They are breathtaking absolutely stunning

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

I kept trying to video as we were driving and it just doesn't do it justice.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yeah, yeah.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

and then after the resort, the image that comes to mind for me is just the beach. It's just beautiful looking out at the lagoon.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

I love that. couldn't quite understand why I kept talking about how much I loved Alani and I said, just wait, just wait and now you get it.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Well, yes, and you know me, right? I love, the island

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Mm hmm.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

I already love Hawaiian food. we cannot wait to go back.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

So before we get into all things Alani I want to remind folks that they have not listened to the first half of Julie's trip at Disneyland go back to last week's episode and check that out Also, if you're on Facebook join our Facebook page, we would love to have you there just search Facebook pages all things travel podcast and look for our logo You can join in the fun All right, Julie. you had a whole other vacation after your time at Disneyland. Talk about the travel to Oahu. How did this plane ride fair compared to your trip from Maryland to Anaheim?

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

both flights were very similar

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Mm hmm.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

I feel like the flight to LA was easier because, number one, we weren't, over water the whole time, which is a little anxiety inducing.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

If you've never done that before, it certainly can be.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yeah, and also, we had such an amazing time at Disneyland, we were excited for Aulani, but we were not prepared for how excited we should have been. we had already been cooped up together for so many days, so that flight was a little bit harder. We gave ourselves some grace, lots of snacks. lots of plane activities, a little bit of iPad movie time, and just hunker down. And then, as you know, and we may have mentioned this before, you want a rental car in Hawaii we got one because of the kids, even though we were only leaving the resort a couple of days having three kids in car seats, it

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yes.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

to have that car with us time so that we Honestly, a place to put the car seats.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

And one of the advantages of being a Disney Vacation Club member is parking is included, For those that don't have that perk, you can either pay for parking or there is a car rental spot directly on Aulani's, resort campus I believe it's in Alamo. Car rental and so you can do that So first impressions you get into honolulu. You're going to rent your car. You're in the airport. What are you thinking?

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

where it's like a long hallway with a bunch of windows and you can just see mountains. You can see all the palm trees. And we were just like, oh, my gosh, I can't believe we're in Hawaii.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

yeah,

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

exit the airport, walk across a little bit and then. Take a lot of elevators. to get to the car rental spot,

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

One of the things I'll say about the rental spot is if folks have been to Las Vegas, it's very much like that where all of the companies are in one location and it's kind of a car rental center. it's very easy to find your spot and get your car. you do have to get out of the airport to get there.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

pushing a triple stroller with, all this luggage,

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

there's that.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

the car seat, it was a lot of, up and down curbs and elevator here, elevator there. It worked out. The kids were a little cooped up, so I was letting them run around in the room while we waited for our rental car. There wasn't really a wait, it's just that there was a line of people, so

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yeah.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

we just had to wait in the line. it was pretty easy after that, and then we, headed off to Ohlone.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

right, so the drive to alani now I told you beware of honolulu traffic it can get crazy

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

didn't hit any traffic, so

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

That's great

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

we were driving there around lunchtime.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

that's good.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

our flight was at 8 a. m.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yes, the first time I went to Aulani we got our rental car and went right into afternoon rush hour traffic and it was just boom bumper to bumper. So that's great to hear.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

No, we had no issues. We got to just enjoy the views of the mountain. as soon as, I knew that you had said that Aulani will come into sight and it will just be beautiful. I was waiting for that. the kids at that point were kind of getting like, when are we there? And I was like, guys, there it

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

you see it about, five minutes before you get to Coalina, you're driving on the highway, you get out of Honolulu, drive through suburbs, if you will, and then you kind of hit a bear spot almost, and then Alani appears over the hill, and you go into this beautiful Coalina community, it feels like a completely different world, doesn't it?

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Coalina is known for being a very quiet area. you go through the gate to get to the community and there's a couple of resorts. They are some condos shopping center. So it's not like there's nothing

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Right.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

outside of Coalina. There's nothing nearby. You've got to

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yeah.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

But it was kind of nice because that meant the only traffic was going to the Coalina area.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

you walk in the lobby, one of the most beautiful Disney lobbies ever. First impressions of the resort.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

It smells good.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

amazing.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

it was very relaxed. It was very chill. We did have to wait a little while for our room, but there was plenty of space in the lobby area for us to do so. There was a little area for the kids to watch TV. We could walk around and I was like, I need to go to the store. we just enjoyed it. It was just so beautiful looking right out at the water, man.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

You walk into this beautiful lobby and you're greeted with a gorgeous view of the water area. So the pools, the water slides, the lazy river, and beyond that, the lagoon with the ocean. Hopefully all of your stress melts away because it's just amazing

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

I remember you kept messaging me being like, first thoughts. What do you think? when you get settled, let me know what your thoughts are. And I was like, first, I don't think I am ever settled. And second, I am very overwhelmed because we had to figure out where lunch

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yeah, yeah

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

all those things and, the kids are really excited, they want to go to the beach, but we need to eat and. You know, just just kind of getting oriented to a new spot. All of that went away by the next morning

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Great.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

we.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yeah, absolutely. I kind of had that first day of a cruise feel Where is everything not sure what's going on? I know it's going to get taken care of and then once you get through that initial shock the relaxation starts

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

I will say the cast members that were working in the lobby area were amazing. they saw us looking around, like, where do we go?

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Mm hmm

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

1 of them walked us down to where the quick service cafe is

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Oh, wow.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

escorted us

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yeah, that's not a short walk. you're talking about escorting a guest about 10 minutes.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yeah, she was kind of giving us an intro about other areas of the resort as we walked. I think the same cast member, when we ended up back in the lobby, escorted us down to the community hall room so we could get set up for our activities later in the week while we were still waiting for our room. They were just so kind.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Very nice.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

looked like, really disheveled.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Probably a little bit of both but I can speak from experience at the cast members there. They love what they do and they love where they are.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

definitely.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

let's talk about your accommodations. You are a Disney Vacation Club member, booking through that, but what you had, people can book with, a regular reservation too. So why don't you talk a little bit about the types of accommodation you had at Aulani.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yes, so we had, saved up points for a while, We had been saving points able to get a one bedroom villa ocean view.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Mm hmm.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

if we're going to Hawaii, I'm not going to have a garden view.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

know, I, I understand why people want to save money and they want to save points. I completely get that. However, If I'm going there, I want to sit with my coffee in the morning on the balcony and watch the ocean.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

And especially with the kids, we knew that we would be doing, some downtime in the room occasionally, or having slower mornings or evenings in the room. So having that view, we definitely utilized

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

hmm. Mm

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

The room was amazing. It was a one bedroom villa, You have a full kitchen, a dining table with a wraparound booth, a living area with a couch, a couple other chairs, the TV, another bed actually pulls down from underneath of the TV, then you have the master bedroom that has the king bed, another TV, chest of drawers, two bathroom spaces, one with a soaking tub a sink and a really big closet,

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

hmm.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Was big enough for the pack and plate to fit in

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yes.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

closet, but that bathroom space.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Ha ha ha ha ha.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

And then another bathroom that had, the walk in shower with the rain shower, and all the other bathroom things which was great. It gave us so much space. We also had a washer and dryer. And 1 of the 1st things we did was wash all of our clothes

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Sure. You've been to Disneyland for almost a week,

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Our plan was to pack light and do laundry. So we definitely did that quite a bit. We had everything packed separately so that we knew what to wash and what not to wash the room was amazing. we were blown away by it. We had looked at a couple videos and pictures, but it was just so lovely. it felt so much bigger than any of the one bedrooms at Disney World. I don't know if it is, but there was a lot of space in that room.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Well, hey, before we get into everything, and I know you're going to talk about Oahu, and you're going to talk about activities at Aulani, and you're going to give tips and advice for families traveling to Aulani, I want to dive into where in the world does all things travel, Julie, and you're going to be excited about this one.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Okay.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

when I looked at all things travel this week, a new location that popped up for us was the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Ooh.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham is a section of West London and also part of inner London. What I want to highlight today because I have a connection to this is within Within Fulham is Chelsea Football Club of the Premier League. The oldest football club in London, Fulham, which is also playing in the Premier League and Queens Park Rangers that are playing in the Championships League. And when I used to teach my international sport governance class and we would go to London, Fulham was the football club that we would visit we would visit with the front office there, take a tour of the stadium, and Go to a game Fulham is Owned by the same family that owns the Jacksonville Jaguars So an interesting discussion was when you would go into the Fulham Stadium there was a visit Florida Sponsorship sign and everybody thought that was rather interesting until they learned the connection Well, hey, Fulham, I have been to your neighborhood several times and would love to meet you there for a pint and a game. To watch the Fulham football club, as long as you're a supporter of them. If not, I'm happy to go to any of the three and reach out to Julie or myself because I would love to send a little thank you gift all the way to Fulham to be featured on today's show. All right, Julie, let's get into Alani. one of the mistakes that I think people make is they go to alani and plan to spend time away from the resort I always say Spend more time at the resort because there's tons to do and you'll want to be there. Is that true? Yeah,

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

how much there was to do. website like gives you a pretty good idea of what's there, but you really have to look to get a full, overview of what there is. the app is amazing with telling you all the things you can do every single day. you can look at that app, from wherever you are. It just doesn't load those activities until about 9 or 10

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

right, right. Yep. Yep.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

you can get a good idea of what's going to be available of those activities, I always recommend or would recommend booking in advance, but you don't have to look everything in advance. Some are more popular than others. it also might depend on what time of year you're going,

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

What were the things that you booked ahead of time?

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yeah, that's a great way to start We booked the luau, which was amazing.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

hmm.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

did general seating. It worked out great for the kids. We still had an amazing view, but I didn't feel terrible that we had to leave early.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Cause everyone fell asleep. Right.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

everyone was melting down and falling asleep.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Disney knows how to put on a good blue out. And I shouldn't say Disney because it is a third party company, but they've worked with Alani the entire time. It's a fabulous show.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

the thing that I really loved about the luau, and I knew this was coming, but kind of forgot about it, is that you get in around 5, The show doesn't really start until seven. So beforehand, you can do a little bit of a ukulele lesson.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Mm hmm.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

temporary tattoo. You can make a lei. There's all these really interactive experiences and I just really appreciated that. My kids loved it. I have the sweetest picture them during the ukulele lessons. I'll have to, post that on Facebook

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

That'd be great.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

And the kids were beyond excited to have temporary tattoos. the luau was great. You have to book that in advance. Something else we booked in advance was, an Explore the Stars activity.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

that's right.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yes, Stephen, my husband did this with, our older two and I stayed back at the room with my youngest because it was in the evening. There's three time slots you can choose and some are adult only and some are all ages.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Mm hmm.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

you do have to pay for each guest, so just because the kids can go, you still have to pay for them. My five year old was blown away by this experience. Steven, obviously, was blown away. he is a space nerd through and through. books about black holes. I don't really want to know about black holes. But he does. the very cool thing about this was they had A really high quality telescope and the telescope could actually take photos of what you are seeing. And then cast member who was leading the activity, shared those photos with everyone.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

That's great.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

The Ring Nebula. I don't know what that is. the Andromeda Galaxy. Again, not 100 percent sure what that is, but they thought it was very cool. it's different stars than what we see here, in Maryland, and it was such a cool thing for them to do. So, highly recommend

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Very good.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

we did Make Your Own Mickey Ears.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

hmm.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

crafting. I will say there was a lot of hot glue gun use I was split between a five and three year old helping them do his hot glue. adult would have been helpful. so just know that going in. But it was really fun and a really great memento the last thing that we booked in advance were cabanas. if you are in an Alani community at all, you know, a Facebook group, whatever people are always talking about these cabanas going quickly.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yeah.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

the 1st day that I could. I knew that we wanted to reserve a cabana and the woman on the phone from Alani said, what days do you want the cabana? And I said, what days are available during my trip? she said, all of them. And I said, okay, I want all of them.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Wow, that is a vacation flex, Julie.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

It was a flex. I did end up modifying it. I took out the days that I knew we were going to be off the resort

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

huh.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

of the day. but the great thing is you can make those changes up until 24 hours before.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

tell us what a cabana included and why you wanted that for your family.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

so the cabanas are spots by the pool. could be at Kiki Cove, which is the splash pad, Menehune Bridge, which is the water playground, the adults only pool, or at the, infinity pool. The cabana is, a huge wraparound couch with, the top over top of it,

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yeah.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

you have a TV, you have a safe, you have a mini fridge, drinks and food are not necessarily included. but you have someone serving them to you, so you don't have to leave the space. your mini fridge is stocked with water that's included in the cost. You get a large fruit platter and fruit in Hawaii is not inexpensive. so that's a great deal to get all this fruit. And then later in the day, you can also get a large dessert platter with Mickey themed desserts, which is really great

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

very cool.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

because again, those are not cheap either. They will come and replenish your towels for you. You don't have to change out your towels at all. Just biggest thing for us was to have a place to land to not have to worry about getting up in the morning. Getting pool chairs, having those pool chairs taken from us potentially throughout the day because out Lonnie is fairly strict with you being at your pool chair.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yes, they are

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

So it really just gave us a place to be with kids. We have so much stuff we're bringing with us. It gave us a space to leave all of that. Being at Kiki Cove, this flash pad was ideal for us because we could actually sit down on the lounger for a second while the kids played. We could have lunch in our cabana and they could watch Bluey on the TV. It was just amazing. It made our stay. It made us be able to relax.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Well, all those sound like really good ideas for prepaid activities But one of the things I love about alani is I haven't paid for very many of those and I still love the resort What were some of your favorite parts of the resort

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

you open that app, there is stuff going on all day long. So now let's go on to things that I booked, as we were on

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yeah,

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

every day, there was so much going on and you could book a couple of days in advance, depending on the activity. here's some of the ones that we did. We each did a sunrise yoga class. that have an extra fee, but it was an amazing class. did, each of us did an ocean fitness class, which was out on a paddle

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

mm hmm

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

in the water,

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

I've seen people do that as I'm walking in the morning with my coffee and I'm wondering, Huh, that looks really strenuous. I'm just gonna saunter along.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

It was so hard, but it was so much fun. It was like a mix of yoga and body weight training. I definitely fell off a couple times. Stephen fell off a couple times. But again, it was something that we booked, on opposite days and whoever wasn't doing the fitness class was back with the kids. So it gave you a little bit of alone time, which was nice. we booked the family sailing adventure, which you book right at the rental location down by the beach. It's really easy to find. You could book that up to the day before air. A couple days in advance. I really wanted to do that because we were not doing a lot off site that was water related

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yeah.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

diving. We weren't snorkeling. was something the whole family could do was to go out on the little sailboat. It was really a great experience. It was about an hour long. and 2 of my children were no cost because 3 and under were free. it was lovely. what else did we do on site? A lot of character greet meetings. We did a Moana story time activity, which was really fun. They reenacted the story of Moana.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yeah.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

just a lot of stuff with the characters are really easy to just walk up and do, So a couple last few things that we booked on site. One of them was I booked a experience for my daughter at Painted Sky Studio, which is like the kids portion of the

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Oh, yeah!

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

And this was basically like a bippity boppity boutique sort of experience, but in Hawaii. So you got to pick the princess dress. they did her hair, all the sparkle stuff. She got all the jewelry. It was very sweet. And she really loved it. You could also book things to get made up for before the luau a couple times a week, there was a hula anniversary celebration

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

cool

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

they would tell some stories and have some hula dancers out by the pool. It was just such a really nice thing for the kids to stop by and no commitment. A lot of those experiences were free. So much to choose from

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

That's really cool. that's awesome So talk a little bit about the resort. What were some of your favorite places Talk about dining at and around Elani. Give us an idea of what life at Elani is

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

life at Alani is amazing Let's just start with that. is so much to do in their pool area They have so many pools and I had a post about this recently as well on one of my social medias But have a lazy river

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

The best lazy river ever

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

It is, and Mia would agree with you because if she was feeling feisty, I took her in there and she fell

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

love it

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

and we just floated around a couple laps. It was great for everyone. they have the Lazy River, they have a zero entry pool, which is like their main pool. I love zero entry pools for the kids. They had an infinity edge pool, which was about three and a half to five feet deep. it had a very lovely view of the ocean, but I don't love the pools being that deep to start off

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

did you hear the Whale sounds underneath the water

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

I didn't.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Well that's the pool that has the grotto in it, correct

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yeah.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yeah, yeah

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Oh, I didn't know that. Oh, well, next time. they have a couple of hot tubs on site. They've got the adults only pool. Then they've got Kiki Cove, which is a splash pad, and Menehune Bridge, which is a massive water playground it's kind of dangerous for parents to walk through because the amount of buckets dropping water in that area is concerning. and then they had 2 big slides. So 1 of them was a body slide. So you went down by yourself. that did empty out into water. Close to 4 feet deep, there was a lifeguard there, thankfully, and then the other side was a tube slide that you could do a single or double tube. really great slides.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

it empties into the lazy river

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

It does empty into the lazy river, which is lovely. those are all the pool areas, but then you have the beach, which is amazing.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

family.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yes, I am a big beach family. I never felt like there were not enough chairs. The water, because it's a man made lagoon, is very clean.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Love it.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

rent sand toys. We did that almost every day. You could rent paddle boards from there. You could rent boogie boards. You could rent snorkeling things. there was so much to do at the beach and it never felt super crowded until the end of our trip, which ran into fall break for the locals on the island. but before that, it never felt crowded. So a lot of pool, a lot of water activities.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

absolutely.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

So let's swing over to dining, right? some of the best things that we ate we had on site at Aulani. Their food was wonderful. I loved the poke bowls at Ulu Cafe. That's a quick service. You can get breakfast, lunch, dinner, grab and go. they have fresh poke bowls every day, fresh acai bowls every day. They had the spam musubis and there was like a line to get that thing.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yeah,

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

asking you, Ryan, where am I supposed to get this Mickey shaped Spam

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

It is a. Wonderful Hawaiian treat. to be honest, I have not had the Mickey one, but I've certainly had them all around the island, and they are so good.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

So what happens is they come out right when Ulu Cafe switches over to lunch. But they're not like next to all the other hot food. They almost put it near the bakery items. It's just this tray of Spam Azubis.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Mm hmm.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

there is a crowd of people waiting. I remember we were getting ready, waiting to order lunch, Then, right at 11, you could start ordering lunch. And I was getting something for the kids. And I was like, what is what is this group for? Like, what are we waiting for? And they were like, the spam.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Ha ha ha ha ha

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

I'm going to join this

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

ha. Yeah. Ha ha ha.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

So that was great.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

The mob mentality of the Musubi.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

It basically was. I mean, they went quickly, but I enjoyed all the food we had there. The kids had pizza many days in a row. it was good. A couple onsite restaurants that you needed reservations for, Ama Ama, which is the signature restaurant. We did not end up eating at Ama Ama. Just wasn't really fitting with our pace. Makahiki has breakfast and dinner. At breakfast, it's a character meal. So we

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yep.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

that. was the best character meal I've ever been to, both with character interactions and with the food.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

That's great.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

was one of the best

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

They have amazing food there. The breakfast food is really good. I think the last time I was there, we had macadamia nut pancakes. we had kalua pork, Omelet, it was really good food. And yes, the character interactions are great I remember one of the trips that I was there we were celebrating my parents 50th wedding anniversary

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

wow.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

comes over with her ukulele and she starts singing them a song and she was giving them kind of a Marriage blessing in hawaiian and it was just really sweet

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Wow. I mean, it is just such a vibe. You're sitting in this open air outdoor restaurant. The characters are coming around the ukulele is going. It is so lovely. that is something that definitely books up though. So if you want to do the character breakfast,

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yes

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

recommend booking that in advance.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Mm

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

dinner at Makahiki. That is a reservation and we did not do that just because we weren't really into making a lot of dinner reservations. for breakfast sometimes did, I think after one of the fitness classes, of course, I stopped at the room and got the malasadas to go,

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

hmm.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

the doughnuts. Amazing. We did off the hook for breakfast 1 day, which is like a quick service

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yeah, kind of a poolside restaurant

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yeah, The food was really good there. We never had anything That we did not like

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Great

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

lunches, we ordered a lot from the pool bar menu because we had that cabana and that was the easiest thing to do. I had these amazing shrimp tacos. I think like 4 times that week, So delicious. Steven was getting some tuna nachos. Everything was so good. They did have a couple other spots for lunch. We just didn't make it there because we always were ordering from the pool bar. Mama's snack stop has like fish and chips and fried shrimp, which is right next to the Mickey shaved ice

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Mickey shaved ice So in hawaii shaved ice is a thing you know and one of the things that you can do at alani is you can add mickey ears to your shave ice To get the instagramable mickey head shaved ice

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

let me tell

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

ha ha ha.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

the best part about the shaved ice, a couple things, is that can pick three flavors. So, and so everyone can kind of make their own, right? So we had gotten two for the family. We ended up with three because the cast member who was making them was realizing that the flavors my daughter was choosing, no one else would want to eat that. because it was just like, I don't, I didn't really want

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Oh, yes.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

It was terrible. So we ended up with these three Mickey head shaped ice with the condensed milk on top, because in Maryland we get snowballs topped with marshmallow,

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yeah.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

that reminded us of

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

the condensed milk is a must.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

It was so delicious. We took him out. We ate him by the beach. They come with these little wooden spoons, right? here is Mia. She's 18 months old and she is just going to town with this wooden spoon. anytime that I stopped eating the shaved ice or Stephen stopped, we got Our wooden spoon, thrust in our face. She was, yelling at us to eat this thing. She can barely

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Ha

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

she

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

ha ha ha.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

she really loved the shaved ice, so I'll have to use that as the picture that I post

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Very nice.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

They also have a stop for Dole Whips. Obviously, we did that a couple

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yep.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

That's down by the beach. They have watermelon, and pineapple. I actually really liked the watermelon there.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

I've had that. I agree.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

for dinner, the thing that I liked was they had the restaurants with the reservations.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yeah. Yeah.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

at Ulu Cafe, but they also had the Olelo Room, which were walk up.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yeah.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

And we never had a problem getting a table there. I think we waited five minutes, and by the time we walked somewhere, our table was ready, The olelo room was a little more like plates

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

there's sushi there, there's appetizers. That's where you're gonna go have a drink and share a meal of different appetizers.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

but they did have a full kids menu So

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

true. Yes. Right?

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

That worked great for us. We really liked it. And again, they have music going at the olelo room in the evenings usually it would be like two guys or one guy playing, either the ukulele or a guitar and it was such a lovely vibe. We did do DoorDash a couple times, which is definitely a

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Mm-Hmm.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

you kind of forget You can still DoorDash things. at least I almost forgot that. That was also something easy to do. The food at Ohlone was phenomenal, but we wanted to try some of the food nearby

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yeah,

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

to load everyone into the car and go.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

absolutely.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

ruins the day when you've had a great day at the beach or the pool, and then you're rushing everyone in the shower and you're rushing everyone to get ready for dinner. one night we did walk across to Monkey Pod. Loved it.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Monkey pot is great.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

It was amazing pizza, great happy hour specials, really good my ties, really great atmosphere with music going all of that. And like, an 8 minute walk from Alani,

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yeah.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

we did plan to do that on a day that we had already been off site in the morning. So we were not having to do that whole shower and let's go kind of thing. night we door dashed from a local pizza place, Mad Bene Pizza. That was really good. We had a spicy salami something pizza. Delicious. one other night we door dashed from, Broke Da Mouth Grinds, which was something that had come up on a

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Mm-Hmm. I, I have, I've seen that on some lists of local food.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yeah, it was really good. I think it would have been better had we eaten in the restaurant, but it was really good. It's like a quick service type place, so it's not like a full restaurant when you go, But again, DoorDash was very simple, very affordable, and just gave us another option.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Great.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

I think that's all the dining. I think I covered every food you could possibly have at Aulani.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

so off of alani You've got a beautiful island of oahu here. What were some of the highlights away from the resort?

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yeah, this section should be a lot shorter, because we didn't leave the resort that much.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

you had some adventures. don't sell yourself short

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

which is what we planned to do. We stuck with activities that we knew would not be super stressful with the kids, that they'd be able to participate in, and that worked really well for us. We went into this with very low expectations.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

having come back from the trip and talking to you about it And having been there several times myself, there are things that you didn't do But what you did do both at disneyland and alani is You knew your family and you said, we can sacrifice seeing some things if it means Everybody's in better shape

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

because to me it's just not worth going a full day, the kids having meltdowns, and then really no one's enjoying

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yeah

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Just to say you did it, right? One day we had purchased in advance going to Kualoa Ranch, The thing about going to Kualoa Ranch is number one, you definitely want to book in advance you want to give yourself time to get there. It's like 45 minutes from Aulani, but it is beautiful. It has the Kualoa mountain range and I have never seen anything like that before.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

h3 is voted one of the best drives in the united states for a reason

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

it was just amazing. a lot of the tours there are very adventurous. You can combine tours, you can just do one single thing. They have ATVs, they have boat tours, zip lining, all this kind of stuff. We stuck with the only option they have that is for all

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yeah,

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

which is the Hollywood Movie Sites bus tour. I was a little like, this is still going to be good. Everyone says to do the ATVs, I will tell you being on the bus meant that we could really just look around us. Whereas if you're on an ATV, you've got to be driving it as well. And maybe not taking in the sites as much. It was amazing. Our driver was great. She was so kind. She knew so much about that area had been working there for so long and on the movie sites tour. You go past all the movie sites and she's explaining them to you But you also get to get off and go down inside a world war ii bunker Which was very cool to walk through it has some historical type stuff in there. But then as you keep walking, it also has a lot of displays about the movies that were filmed

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

yeah, yep

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

At the end, we got to go in a vehicle from Jurassic World and see some of the animatronics from that. That was really cool. We also got to get off the bus in an area where there was a bunch of the bones from Kong, Skull Island, and from some of the Jurassic Park movies. And I have to post this picture here. That our driver took of us if I haven't already posted it But she brings this little toy dinosaur along and she names him frank the way that she holds him in the frame of the photo? It looks like a t rex is attacking you It's just really really cool. The kids had a great time on this they just loved it so much they were very into seeing all the stuff and seeing the sights so you see all these movie sites but then you also see It all the farming that they're doing there, all the agriculture, all the fruits they're growing. It was very fun. They have a little farmer's market shop there, so we bought some stuff That was great, after that, we went to the Byodo in temple, which is a replica

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yep,

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

temple. very peaceful place.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

it is beautiful there.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

that was on Stephen's list to do, and it was just going to be a quick stop. There is an entry fee of like five

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yeah Yeah,

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

but it's a very short visit if you want it to be. You can go in, ring the bell. which is a really cool thing for the kids to do. The goal of ringing the bell is that it cleanses you of all negative, feelings or thoughts that are around you. And then there's different places that you could go meditate. You could walk through the temple. There's a big Buddha statue there. There's koi ponds all over. It is a lovely space to visit. We were there maybe 20 minutes tops, but it was lovely.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

I think it's worth the stop for folks if they're on that side of the island. Definitely.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

And it was not out of our way. It was on our

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yeah

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

to Alani. So that worked out for us. that was the end of that day. We then went back to the resort. we had door dashed something, or maybe that was the night we went to monkey pod and then Steven did his explore the stars

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Very good

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

So we didn't do any water stuff that day. then the 2nd day we plan to go off site was to go to the North Shore and we went into this trip with a bunch of things on our North Shore list.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yep

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

We didn't get to

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

It can be a busy day and so I tell folks that they do have a car when they're at Aulani and they're there long enough. I think the North Shore could even be a day and a half or two days depending on how you do it.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yeah.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

if you couple it with a trip to Costco, if you want to go up the far side of the North shore versus going to Halifa. So there's definitely some ways to extend that, but your day was great. Tell us about it.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

our goal for this day was to the first thing we were doing was going up to why may a valley,

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Mm hmm.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

is a park. It's a botanical garden. They have waterfalls. And that's what we wanted to do. We wanted to see the waterfall. So we walked through all the botanical garden. Pushing our triple stroller with our three minions in it. it's a little over a mile, but it is paved

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

And it's beautiful because it's a botanical garden, so you've got the flowers and the trees if you like to look at that stuff, take pictures it's just absolutely gorgeous.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

and it was so peaceful, this is what we came to Hawaii to do,

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Mm hmm.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

nature of it, and it was lovely. So you get to the waterfall, and there's a stand there with two lifeguards, they have a ton of life jackets, there's places for you to set your stuff down, there's snacks and stuff like that available, so it's definitely a tourist destination. But that's okay.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yeah.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

that meant we didn't have to bring as much of our own stuff if we

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

So everyone got their life jackets. There's kind of a path through the rocks to get down into the water,

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

ha!

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

The kids were kind of freaking out a little bit. It was a very unknown thing. You're swimming in like, free, open water, to an extent. Stephen and I, and both of the older 2 kids did get to swim over to the waterfall. We had to take turns because Mia was

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Sure.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

The kids were just beaming with excitement to be able to swim to a waterfall and you could see that they were just so proud of themselves to be able to do that. It wasn't empty, but it also wasn't crowded. it was really great. We then had plans to stop at some of the beaches on the way back. That kind of got scrapped because the kids were asleep. But as Ryan said, just driving down those highways is beautiful I still felt like I got the views that I wanted

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Right.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

having to stop at the beaches. we were making our way towards the town of Halifa that Ryan had recommended, but Ryan failed to tell me that the. Truck he told me to go to was not where he told me to park.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

No, not at all.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

a solid

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

No, I did fail, because I would, in my mind, you would never make that connection,

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

park at the shopping center? He's like, yeah, that's good and I'm like, okay I'm gonna walk to Giovanni's or whatever then Ryan didn't answer me for the rest of the day later he was like, oh my god, you walked that? We didn't know there was food trucks all over the place. We didn't know exactly where the food truck we

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yeah.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

We got to really enjoy the town of Halifa because we walked through the entire thing.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Very good.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

it was really sweet.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Halifa is just a really neat little town. Lots of shops. they have their own really nice beach Masamoto shave ice is there. it's a really nice kind of Anchor for the North Shore.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yeah, and we didn't get there until like 2pm by the time we had finished with the waterfall and the hike and driving there. So had we gotten there a little earlier, we probably would have enjoyed more of the town, but the goal really was food

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

we made our way down to Giovanni's I got in the massive line and Steven called an uber to get our car

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

that is problem solving Absolutely.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

so he's doing that two kids are asleep in the stroller it wasn't the worst thing the shrimp were amazing

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

so good. you've got you've got sticky rice garlic scampi shrimp. mac salad on the side. And you just go to town on this amazing plate of food. You sign your name on the side of the truck in Sharpie. It is an experience.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

So

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

did you get the homemade hot sauce?

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

I did not get

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

the hot sauce is great.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Right, but my kids are little and if they decided to try something

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

it.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

I didn't want it to be

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Got it. that's my recommendation for next time a must for the mac salad and get the hot sauce on the side Do not order the hot shrimp. I'm telling you to get the hot sauce on the side because they actually say no refunds on the hot shrimp

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

they

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

because people have tried to return it because it's too hot to eat

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

dip it in some mac salad. So, one, pro tip here, if anyone is going here with children, is that they also offer hot dogs.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

hmm.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

What kid doesn't like a hot dog? Because I was kind of standing there like, what the heck are the kids gonna eat? Oh, there's a food truck here that was serving Mexican style foods. I could get them a quesadilla. But then I was like, oh, hot dogs! Perfect. You could also get it with the garlic sauce if you wanted to, but we didn't do that. They were fine with just the hot dog. something that was super fun, and we mentioned this in the Disneyland episode was We have a local Hawaiian restaurant, and when we went there, when we came home from this trip, they have a very large mural of the North Shore and other areas of Oahu, and Giovanni's shrimp truck is one of the sites that they have painted on the mural,

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

that's so cool.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Ellie's like, Hey, we went there and I'm like, we did because the truck is white and there's writing all over it. So you could definitely tell that was Giovanni shrimp and they have a dish called Giovanni shrimp at the restaurant. that was a really cool tie in for the kids. we did our shrimp stuff. We stopped in the town of Polita. We did. Want to stop at the doll plantation on the way back. I thought that would be a fun thing for the kids to do, but by then we were just kind of done. We just wanted to get back to Alani, you know, next time. Maybe didn't feel like we were missing out. We had a very full day and we just went back and probably door dash some dinner and called it a

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

That's a great day. I would say, for me, if you're taking two days to be away from the resort, those are the two days you're doing.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Yeah.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

So any tips or advice for a family like yours going to Aulani?

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

A couple things. I'm going to name, 5 of them.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Okay.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Plan some extra days because the jet lag is very

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

It's real.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

We came back on a Friday. We landed in Baltimore around 1 in the morning, got to our house around 3 a. m. We all slept till noon. The kids passed out at 7 p. m. and treated it like a nap. And then we're up until one in the morning. So, plan extra days both in destination and some time off when you come back. Try to come back on a Friday so you've got that Saturday and Sunday for everyone to attempt to get back on schedule. I cannot imagine if I had to send them to school the next day. activities in advance, but also don't be disappointed if you don't get what you want because there is so much to do that I mentioned earlier.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Reservations change while you're there just like at Walt Disney World. don't be afraid to check in and ask

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

I know that one of the things they say is if you did not get the Makahiki character breakfast before you arrived, come down at 7, 730 and see if there's room because there probably is. plan your dining, but plan it out tentatively. So when we went into the trip, we had a list of, what we want to do for dinner. This is our tentative dinner plan. If we want to do door dash, these are the two to three options we can pick from, but we never felt tied to that plan. we also had reservations for, Mina's Fish House, which is next

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Mm hmm.

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Seasons. We ended up canceling it. It just didn't work with our plans that day. be loose. Don't feel like you've got to. Follow that schedule all the way, but, do take advantage of DoorDash if you don't feel like leaving the resort but want to try some more local foods. the cabana. Just, just do it. Just rent the cabana. yourself some grace. You're on vacation. You've already spent all this money and all this time traveling to Hawaii. You definitely want to enjoy that day. continue to check the app. The character meetings are on there. They're going on all day long. check the app. There's so much to do that you wouldn't know if you were not looking for it.

ryan_1_11-17-2024_194102:

Those are great tips for families of any age to be honest. I think that fits for everybody. So as We wrap up Future plans for the chafers when it comes to Aulani and Hawaii. I bet the answer is yes But I want to see what you're thinking

j_1_11-17-2024_194102:

I cannot wait to go back. I don't know when we will. the kids came home and wanted me to plan the next trip. I think it will be closer to four to five years, until we go back just because the travel time and everything else, and my kids missed quite a bit of school for this trip, as you can imagine. so yeah, hopefully four to five years and for now I'll just have to fulfill my cravings by going to the local Hawaiian restaurant. fun fact, I was there last night.
