j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

we always talk about Walt Disney World being such a magical place. I'm always describing it to my clients as a magical vacation. It's a magical experience. You're in the Disney bubble, but it also is a lot more than that for a lot of people. this really applies to my generation because my generation is like that Disney adult generation where

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

yes.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

took us back in the eighties and the nineties and we remember parts of that trip. when we visit now brings us back to that age and that wonder Of the vacation. So there's so much nostalgia associated with returning to Walt Disney World.

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

I think it's interesting because you grew up going to Walt Disney World. you can tie back Walt Disney World to time with your grandparents and staying at the Polynesian. I just had a different experience. I remember going to each of the parks once when we would spring break in Florida and then I didn't go until I was a dad. but we both kind of appreciate that Disney bubble. And so my nostalgia is gonna be very different than yours'cause mine's gonna be focused on probably, thinking about my kids when they were little, and you're probably gonna be thinking about you when you were little.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

Right. Isn't that so fun? you know, you make it sound like I went all the time. I went when I was four. I went when I was eight then I went, my grandparents used to go to Kissemee for the month of March every year. And I think I went twice when they did that, like once in high school, once in college. so I really was not like

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

Okay.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

Disney nut. It wasn't like my family went every single year. That being said, I do have super strong memories of, especially when I was eight, that vacation. a lot of this calls back to that and some of it for me is also gonna call back to being with my kids.

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

before we talk about nostalgic Disney, I wanna remind folks if you did not listen to last week's episode, we gave some great tips for travelers on their first trip to Europe. Alright, Julie, why don't you start us off with the park that started it all. Magic Kingdom.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

Yes. This first part of the podcast we're gonna talk about what in each park evokes that nostalgia, whether it's personally for us or for our guests. Magic Kingdom obviously has the most nostalgia associated with it, with Walt Disney World. We're not, we're not on Disneyland yet. We might allude to that later, but. Disney World. So Magic Kingdom was built in 1970. It opened in 1971. So there's a lot of generations at this point that could have gone, and a lot of the rides from opening day or opening year are still there.

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

Yeah.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

I know for a lot of people that are like my parents' age, the biggest one is it's a small world. They remember going to that at the World's Fair back in the sixties. even though it's not the exact same version that is at Walt Disney World right now. it's still a huge callback. I remember even my grandmother talking about that, going to see it at the World's Fair, and that was always her one ride. She would insist on doing at Magic Kingdom

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

Hmm.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

And you know, shows like the Carousel of Progress, same thing. It was at the World's Fair. For me, magic Kingdom and nostalgia is more the feeling on Main Street, USA. It's walking down, seeing the castle, seeing the shops, knowing what Main Street USA was modeled after from Walt's childhood and all those kind of things, that, that really evoke a lot of nostalgia for me because that is the place where you walk in, you're walking down Main Street, and I feel like I'm a kid again. the music is going, you're smelling the popcorn, the confectionary, the hot dogs, and all those things that make it just nostalgic.

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

Yeah, I, so I remember, I used to teach at an event, facility management class at the university, and when we would talk about event theming, I would show a video. Of somebody walking into Main Street because it's actually designed to be like walking into a movie. after you do your ticket and you walk into the tunnel, there's those ride posters are supposed to be like movie posters and it's, it's intentionally kind of dark. So as you walk into Main Street, this the quote unquote screen is meant to. Open up in front of you and there's intentionally the smell of popcorn to evoke that sense of movie. and yeah, so for me, main Street, uh, more than the rides, the specific rides, to be honest, is that, is Walt Disney World Magic Kingdom for me.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

Like that is the magic place, right? Just that feeling on Main Street is very hard to explain to someone who

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

Yeah.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

been. Epcot was the next park that opened in Walt Disney World, it opened in 1981.

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

Yep.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

to me, I have a lot of memories of Epcot, but Epcot has changed a lot. So right now let's talk about the things that are still there that might evoke some nostalgia to me that's the lands and the seas pavilion that aquarium has been there for. I remember going there as a kid, I have so many memories in recent years, my kids kind of going and seeing, Heads up to the glass, looking into the aquariums,

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

Yeah.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

that to me, feels like Epcot.

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

And to be honest, I don't remember anything about Epcot except for the countries And again, as a dad,

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

Wow.

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

um, I really don't.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

So you got

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

The countries I remember specifically because I really enjoyed that part of it. I remember watching the Jur in Italy.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

Yeah.

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

But the other parts I just don't remember as much.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

And so much of that though, those countries, they really have not changed. Maybe like the Internal rides, right? Like maelstrom has changed to Frozen ever after, but a lot of the other stuff really has not changed in those countries, which is kind of nice.

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

Yeah. Yeah.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

that can definitely evoke a really nostalgic feeling just walking around that country. Like, you know, you've been there before. You've eaten all those places before that can really kind of feel like home. All right. Hollywood Studios. this park has gone through so many transformations, and I think the one thing that feels, well, two things to me, feel pretty original to the park. this opened in 1989 as MGM studios.

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

Yep.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

I don't know that these are 100% originals to the park because when it did open, it was like half of what it is now. It truly was meant to be only a half day park. But the Indiana Jones stunt spectacular. I can remember going to that as a

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

Yes.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

has not changed.

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

No.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

thing.

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

no, it's just,

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

it's

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

I love it because I remember that from my first trip

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

you do.

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

and, and, and my kids have always wanted to go there too. So it's just, it's just neat that it's always been there. for me growing up as a Star Wars kid, I remember Star Tours. so I don't know if those are original, but they were original on my first trip and.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

for a long time.

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

And one of the things that's always special to me with Hollywood Studios, I visited when it was MGM, and I actually got picked to be in a stage show, and so that was fun to be up there and be a part of that.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

that show's not there anymore, but the idea of the entertainment

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

Yeah.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

for

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

Yeah.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

I also really, I mean, tower of Terror is like my favorite ride at this point. And it's not even like there's anything super spectacular about that one. But I remember going on that ride Over and over again when I was eight on that trip with cousins and family. and that's just a ride that I really hold dear. I love doing that. I love the ride itself is meant to be like, nostalgic, right? Like calling back to hotels in Hollywood, it just is a really good feeling. animal kingdom we're kind of gonna. Skip over it like nothing has really left animal

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

Yeah, and, I did not visit this until I was a dad, and I feel like everything's I mean, things are going to change soon, but really it, it's been the same park ever since I've been going to it.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

It opened in 98, so it has been there for a while at this point, but they haven't gotten anything that was like there. There's nothing that was like a huge fan favorite that they've gotten rid of. Um. briefly, briefly about the resorts. I think the biggest thing about the resorts that is great for nostalgia, this is not even something that I went to as a kid, I've gone to it a couple times as an adult. And one of the reasons we love it so much is because it does feel like something that is very.

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

It's so cool.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

is the hoop D do review over at the Fort

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

Yep.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

This is a dinner show, so you can choose different levels of seating. It is a phenomenal show.

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

Yes.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

humor, right?

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

Yep.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

they have good food. It's simple food. It's fried chicken and ribs and this country theme. It is a vibe. It

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

Yeah.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

So just a fun night. And that is original. That's a 1971

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

It is. It is. And it's, it's great. It's, if you have not done it, carve out some time on your next trip.'cause it is one of those things that you may not even know it's there, but once you go, you're gonna really love that you went. And I think you're gonna love them. I'm gonna say this Julie, for me, when I think of resorts and I think of nostalgic Disney, I think of the Polynesian.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

Right,

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

Yes.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

Finally, you're listening to me, Ryan. That is the reason I love the Polynesian so much is because it feels so nostalgic to me. I stayed there when I was eight, and I have amazing memories of that vacation and just knowing that that resort is original to Walt Disney World it opened in 1971. Obviously it's undergone a lot of refurbishment, but just knowing it was Part of the original plan is just so cool to me it just, it really feels like Walt Disney World to me.

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

So what do we wish was still there? Julie, what about Magic Kingdom? What do you wish that was still there? That's not there now.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

This one still hurts, Mm. Splash Mountain. that was my absolute favorite ride. I like the Tiana re theme and it's not

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

I.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

like I loved the characters or anything like that. It's that that was another ride that I went on over and over again. As a kid, I can. Distinctly remember, the fireworks were going off, we weren't watching the parade or the fireworks that night, and there was no one in line. it just, brings back those memories. Makes you feel like a kid. It's a fun ride. There was a lot of singing. you're in the water, you're going down little drops, and then a really big drop. You get the funny photos. Um, that was just always something really special to me. And when they announced the re theme, uh, you know, I completely understand. I'm all for the re theme in today. Today's culture, today's environment. I do like the Tiana ride. I think that speaks a lot better to families nowadays.

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

Yeah, it's great.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

Yeah, as soon as my daughter hit the height minimum for Splash Mountain, we took a trip that weekend, I booked the trip Monday, we left on Friday because I was like, I am going to have this experience. With her. I want to be able to experience this and have this memory with one of my kids. the other ones obviously weren't gonna be tall enough before the re theme. I'm excited to take them back on it this year as Tiana's Bayou Adventure because we haven't gotten to do it yet as a

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

Yeah, That's great. I was going to jokingly say the stitch ride, but I hated that ride

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

gosh. And Ryan, you probably don't know this, and this is not a ride that I wish was back. This is a ride that myself and I know a lot of people on the internet agree should never have been in the

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

Yeah. Yeah. Agreed.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

about?

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

No.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

terrestrial ride, which is what was there before Stitch.

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

No idea.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

this ride,

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

No idea.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

I remember being eight years old, my parents taking me on this. It was the exact same thing as Stitch, but instead of, so like same like theater set up and everything, same, same type of effects. There was a small sign outside that said it might be scary or something like that. It should have been. A huge sign because it was so terrifying. if you've never done stitch the, which you probably a lot of people probably haven't,'cause it's been closed for so long at this point. and it's not coming back anymore. it's like a round type theater. There's a tube in the center, you're strapped into your seat with like a shoulder harness.

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

Yeah.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

And everyone has a view of the center tube. And when it was alien encounter, this literally alien from the movie Alien came down in the tube. the theater is pitch black. It's lights are shining. There's strobe lights. You can kind of see the alien. You kind of can't. The theater goes dark, and all you hear is glass breaking, and the alien has escaped. It's flying around the room. It's breathing on you. It's spitting at you like the most terrifying experience of my life at Walt Disney World. I came out that theater crying. know, there should have been a warning and I know a lot of people were traumatized why was Magic Kingdom the park for this

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

Right, right.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

it in Hollywood Studios.

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

let's talk about Epcot. For me, it's El. It's Ellen's Energy Adventure. I remember that ride. I really like that ride. I understand why it didn't fit anymore. I love what's there now,

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

Yeah,

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

that was a fun ride.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

it was really different. If you hadn't been on Ellen's energy adventure, it was like. You were in this huge moving vehicle, right, of just

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

Yeah,

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

it was like being in a moving movie theater, with all the rows and it talked about how energy is produced and how it can be produced better there. I remember like the dinosaur

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

Dinosaurs. Absolutely. The Jeopardy game,

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

Yeah.

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

that stuff.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

it was narrated by Ellen DeGeneres. Right.

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

Yep.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

and it was presented by Exxon for a long time, and my grandfather used to work for Exxon, so that was always like a nice little callback for us. I liked that ride so much.

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

Okay.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

the really big one in Epcot was Body Wars. And I know this has a little bit of a following, so if you're also a Body Wars fan let me know or, go watch it on YouTube, Ryan.

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

Okay.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

essentially the, was essentially star tours. Like the same idea

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

But through your body.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

but through your body. And there was a problem, like, I don't know if somebody swallowed something and you had to go get it, but you were basically transported into a red blood cell and went through the body and it was crazy. It was so much fun. I remember Epcot used to have all those pavilions, that were truly about, your body, Science, interactive science experiments. You could get on this weird kind of exercise bike and touch all these things and be very interactive and that was such a great piece of Epcot that I miss.

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

So for me, when we're talking Hollywood studios, anything that has to do with actual studios, I want, as part of it,

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

Mm-hmm.

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

If they can't do that, what I wish would come back is the street atmosphere. I miss the street atmosphere, the actors doing their characters. I miss that so much,

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

Yeah, I

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

you know?

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

a really big difference.

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

It was interesting when I was at Universal a few weeks ago, seeing that return, both the Epic universe and then some of the classic ones at Universal. I'm like, yeah, I really, really miss that at Hollywood Studios.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

It makes you feel like you're part of the story

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

Yeah,

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

when you can interact like that. So when you talk about studio things, are you talking about the back lot?

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

yeah,

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

tour?

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

I love that stuff.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

What do you remember about back lot?

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

I just remember the Golden Girls House, that's all. Oh, and the Psycho House. I remember those too. That's the only things I remember. But anything that has to do with actual movies, studios, I really geek out on,

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

So was that also, or was this a different attraction? I'm thinking of where it was like you would go behind the scenes and there'd be a big water scene they were filming and then a big fire scene

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

Yes, yes,

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

Yeah. Is that the same thing

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

yes.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

Yeah.

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

No, same thing.

Oh, that was like such a great experience. I really liked that. And again, things were just so much more interactive and making you part of the story. for me, the biggest nostalgia item at Hollywood Studios is the Honey I Shrunk, the Kids Playground. Did you ever see this or was it

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

I don't think so.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

I'm not a hundred percent sure where this was. I'm thinking back where Galaxy's Edge is now, but. Growing up in the eighties, nineties, the honey ice shrunk, blah, blah, blah. Movies

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

Yeah.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

right? Um, and there actually, there used to be a show, I think the show was at Epcot, where they, it was Honey, I Shrunk the Audience. And that was really fun too.

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

Yes, I remember that show.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

Yeah, I liked that a lot. they used to have the big playground and it was such a great space for kids I really wish that they would bring something like that back to Hollywood Studios where they had some sort of interactive play area for kids. You know, the leaves are supersized, their supersized mushrooms, all sort supersized bugs. It was just a lot of fun to

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

if we did this episode in five or 10 years, may be nostalgic about Muppet Vision 3D.

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

Yeah.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

just closed last month. I have a lot of hope that it's gonna be repurposed somewhere, so hopefully we're not nostalgic for it and we're still enjoying it.

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

Okay. as we wrap up, Julie, what's the one attraction at Disney that you hope never goes away?

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

Peter Pan's flight.

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

Why I.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

This is like the place that we always go first. Peter Pan is probably my family's favorite Disney movie. It just feels really magical with like the going to Neverland idea. we have a lot of peter Pan decorations in our

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

Mm-hmm.

quotes, things like that. and my kids just really love that ride. I just think it's great. It's not, like the best, most exciting ride, but it's really

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

It's a classic. Absolutely. For me, it's Sorin.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

Oh yeah,

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

Because in EB Cot, I think Sorn is the perfect ride because if you have the engineering of the ride, you have the science of flight and experiences around the world. I just think it checks so many boxes for EB Cot. I love it.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

am so happy that we got to see the Tilted Eiffel Tower. I didn't know it was tilted in real life, you know?

ryan_2_07-01-2025_155932:

But you know, when I went to Disneyland and seeing. the Soren over California. Again, I really would like them to alternate that'cause I think that's such a neat thing to do. I, I know they did that a little bit in Walt Disney World. I hope they bring that back.

j--madam-_1_07-01-2025_155932:

I do too.
