Hello and welcome to All Things Travel. Today we're wrapping up our Cruising 1 0 1 series, and we'll be discussing the last and maybe most stressful part of your cruise, disembarkation and we'll also share some overall tips to make your cruise smoother.

j_2_01-19-2026_151916

Listen in with travel advisors, Ryan and Julie. He is your travel professor teaching you everything you need to know to have a magical vacation, and I am a Disney loving Maryland mom of three and a specialist in family travel. Together we are the co-owners of Wonder and Beyond Travel. Whether we're discussing incredible destinations, top vacation tips, or sharing personal stories, it's always all things travel

ryan_2_01-19-2026_151916

So Julie, when we're talking about Disembarkation, what's a pet peeve?

j_2_01-19-2026_151916

luggage,

ryan_2_01-19-2026_151916

Luggage can,

j_2_01-19-2026_151916

out what you're gonna do with it.

ryan_2_01-19-2026_151916

the timing, the luggage, all that kind of stuff. And it's also a really hectic day.

j_2_01-19-2026_151916

It

ryan_2_01-19-2026_151916

And so today I want to talk about what it is, how to manage it, and what are some ways that you can, make it a little smoother on both your sanity and your logistics.

j_2_01-19-2026_151916

Yeah, I think especially for a first time cruiser, they get that paper in their state room

ryan_2_01-19-2026_151916

Yeah.

j_2_01-19-2026_151916

what is this?

ryan_2_01-19-2026_151916

if you're not quite there yet in your cruise journey, check out last week's episode where we talk about what Embarkation day is and how to maximize your time and your fun on your first cruise. the first thing to know about disembarkation is it's scheduled, not a free for all. guests are assigned a time and a place based on their plans. just like you said, Julie, a couple days before the last day you're gonna get a paper or a packet in your state room and it's gonna have some luggage tags and it's gonna have some information. it'll say boarding groups 86 or something like that. take this with a grain of salt, meaning they do give you assigned times to leave the ship. That doesn't mean you have to be off the ship at that time.

j_2_01-19-2026_151916

Yes.

ryan_2_01-19-2026_151916

You can. In fact, this is one of my top tips. If your travel plans allow it, have a sit down breakfast. don't feel like you have to grab and go take your time. It's okay. Nobody's gonna kick you off the ship unless you're there way later than anybody else.

j_2_01-19-2026_151916

Yeah.

ryan_2_01-19-2026_151916

But pay attention to that time, especially if you're doing transfers through the cruise line, that's when those times do matter.

j_2_01-19-2026_151916

exactly. You don't wanna miss that transfer for sure.

ryan_2_01-19-2026_151916

So the next thing people are often confused about is having crews assist or self assist when it comes to their luggage. One of the things they're gonna offer is, put your luggage outside, the night before, and. We will take care of it and have it for you. I did not like this the first couple times I cruised, it kind of creeped me out. But I will tell you there's nothing wrong with it. I've done it multiple times. it does mean you have to have your stuff out by 10, PM or midnight the night before. And, but keep anything that you need. So keep those boarding documents, keep your passport. don't put that stuff in your luggage. Keep your toiletries and your pills for the next morning, but everything else will be taken care of by the cruise line, and that can make that next morning a lot more manageable,

j_2_01-19-2026_151916

Yeah, a few things to think about with that. first, depending on what your plans are for that last evening, you might be packing up before dinner.

ryan_2_01-19-2026_151916

Yeah. the timing on this, and especially too, like with your family, Julie, you know, you've got five people. I don't really know if you want to do this. It really just depends on, What your situation is, but I will tell you, don't freak out about it.

j_2_01-19-2026_151916

It.

ryan_2_01-19-2026_151916

There's nothing wrong with it. you know they're gonna handle your luggage just fine. yeah.

j_2_01-19-2026_151916

thing too though is, and I remember we thought about this on our Freedom of the Seas cruise with Royal Caribbean. we took our luggage with us from what I remember, but we carried it down the steps because those elevators are nuts.

ryan_2_01-19-2026_151916

So think about that. If you are doing self assist, which means you handle your own luggage, that last morning, you will be dealing with a lot of people at the elevator. So can you use the stairs, The advantage of the self assist is you can really get off the ship whenever you want. You don't have to worry about luggage and all that kind of stuff, especially if you have an early flight or early travel plans. I would recommend doing this.

j_2_01-19-2026_151916

And when you say early flight, we still say Do not book a flight before

ryan_2_01-19-2026_151916

Yes.

j_2_01-19-2026_151916

But

ryan_2_01-19-2026_151916

that one,

j_2_01-19-2026_151916

people out there

ryan_2_01-19-2026_151916

yes.

j_2_01-19-2026_151916

10:00 AM flight

ryan_2_01-19-2026_151916

Yep.

j_2_01-19-2026_151916

to be one of the first people off the ship, which means no breakfast on the ship. You are just running out.

ryan_2_01-19-2026_151916

Yep. once you leave the ship, you're gonna go through customs and immigration, and yes, this does work like customs and immigration at the airport, I would say it's not as strict, but they definitely can be. you're gonna leave the ship, walk through the terminal, and oftentimes you'll be in something that's kind of warehouse looking

j_2_01-19-2026_151916

Mm-hmm.

ryan_2_01-19-2026_151916

your luggage will be there in a group. You pick up your luggage and head through customs and immigration. Sometimes they ask for your documents, sometimes they don't. oftentimes there'll be facial recognition or some sort of scan of your passport. If you're using your birth certificate, there's a separate line for that, and in our experience, the birth certificate line was way longer than the passport line, so something to consider.

j_2_01-19-2026_151916

Yeah. Along with this, if you have made any large purchases on the cruise ship or one big at the casino, You might need to declare that before getting off the ship. when I say large purchases, I'm thinking things like jewelry, a watch, really expensive handbags. I mean, who knows? Some of those things you may need to declare.

ryan_2_01-19-2026_151916

Julie talked about a flight here a minute ago, If my cruise gets in at 6:00 AM and oftentimes I wake up and I'm already in the port, why can't I have that 8:00 AM flight? It'll get me home much earlier. What do you say about that?

j_2_01-19-2026_151916

If your ship docks on time, you are lucky because a lot of times ships come in late.

ryan_2_01-19-2026_151916

I.

j_2_01-19-2026_151916

where the port is closed for weather or the ship. who knows what it is that could delay your ship coming in. You also have to clear customs once you come in, the ship has to do that, You obviously have no control over that. there also can be a lot of backups on the way to the airport. say you up to the airport and the bag check line is an hour long. there are just so many delays that can happen

ryan_2_01-19-2026_151916

Yep.

j_2_01-19-2026_151916

you don't have control over any of them. After 12.

ryan_2_01-19-2026_151916

Yeah, agreed. And obviously, if you are getting off the ship in Fort Lauderdale where the airport is literally right there, that makes a difference versus Port Canaveral where you're at least an hour away from the airport. So keep in mind, you want to have a lot of buffer time when it comes to the flights.

j_2_01-19-2026_151916

and just also considering too, you also don't want a super late flight because. What are you doing that day? You're sitting in an airport, sometimes you can't check your bags until 2, 3, 4 hours before your flight.

ryan_2_01-19-2026_151916

The last thing to consider with this last day is your bill. The last day is when your gratuities, if you have not prepaid, will go on the credit card that's associated with your, with your state room. And things will still process overnight. So those drinks you got the last night, The casino bills or maybe you picked up a t-shirt. Make sure you check your bill the last day of the cruise, but know that there's some other things that, may be added. If you see a discrepancy on your bill that last day, go to customer service. do not wait till the morning because a lot of people are doing last minute administration duties. IE paying money at that customer service desk. So Julie, before we have some general tips, I wanna talk about where in the world is Wonder and Beyond Travel? So I have been working with a couple and it made me kind of chuckle around this whole cation thing that we've been talking about the last couple weeks. it's a couple and their two small children are flying over to Europe. They've never been to Europe before. the whole trip started with Scotland because of Harry Potter and, Outlander. I said, okay. And they're like, well, but we want to go to London. Why do you wanna go to London? the flights were cheaper going into London. Okay, we're gonna add London. And they're like, we also wanna go to Belgium. Okay. Why do you want to go to Belgium? Well, the chocolate and the beer, so literally, this is the epitome of a y Cajun, right? They're like, well, we're gonna be in Europe. So we want to experience these things. I'm gonna be working with them on the logistics of London, Scotland, primarily Edinburgh, and getting them over to Bruge Belgium. I think the best thing we're gonna do is to fly into Paris, then take the train to Bruge, spend a couple days in Bruge, and then take the train to London, spend a couple days in London, and then take the train up to Scotland.

j_2_01-19-2026_151916

Oh, that sounds so

ryan_2_01-19-2026_151916

What a fun European family vacation, don't you think?

j_2_01-19-2026_151916

Wow.

ryan_2_01-19-2026_151916

Well, we love celebrating with our clients and where they're headed, It inspires our curiosity and we can't wait to hear about their trip. And if you work with Julie and I, who knows, maybe your trip will be next. All right, Julie, so as we wrap up this series, I have a couple general cruise tips, and the first is having to do with your accommodations. and again, this is especially true for first time cruisers who haven't been through this before. The first thing to know is your cabin is not a hotel room. It is usually much smaller and the bathroom is definitely smaller. So be prepared for that, but also know there's a lot of things you can do to maximize that space. So having collapsible bags, having over the door organizers, having magnetic hooks can make a huge difference in. Your experience in the state room, especially on longer cruises, pop up, hampers, all that kind of stuff that can fold up easily, but allow lots of storage and organization during the cruise. Cruise apps can be your best friend before and during your cruise. Make sure as soon as you book your cruise, you download your cruise app and you put your information in because you're gonna be using that to reserve things before the cruise to see cruise information. And then definitely on your cruise, that is gonna be your go-to thing, and you do not need to have the wifi package in order to use. Your cruise app while you're on the ship. not everything is included. cruises are very all inclusive, but that doesn't mean you're not racking up money by going to Starbucks every day. Also, there may be things you avoid doing because you think they're going to cost extra, so take the time to get to know what's included and what's not included. We often talk about the cost to get on the ship. Versus the cost to get off the ship. So what are you paying for before versus after? And if you thought you were saving money by, not getting the specialty coffee package, but then each of you go and get two coffees a day, you're probably actually paying more than you would've if you would've prepaid for that before the cruises.

j_2_01-19-2026_151916

our role is to advise you on those types of things of what's gonna work best for you.

ryan_2_01-19-2026_151916

Excursion days can be long pace yourself, especially if you're going on a seven night cruise where there's multiple port days where you're doing excursions. Know that You're going to do yourself a disservice by going, going, going, and not slowing down and pacing yourself to one, enjoy the destination better, and two, not be completely exhausted from your vacation, which cruises can definitely be a culprit of that, can't they?

j_2_01-19-2026_151916

Yes, yes.

ryan_2_01-19-2026_151916

So a late afternoon sea day nap or a quiet balcony moment, can be as memorable as a port excursion. Absolutely. So maybe, choosing an excursion in the afternoon, so that means a slower morning or choosing something first thing, and that way you have the afternoon to relax or maybe choosing to not do an excursion and just get off and stretch your legs for a little bit.

j_2_01-19-2026_151916

Yeah, and I think that some people might listen to that. when I think of my clients, the families, or even my personal experience, it's. Hard to get a moment to yourself to relax, but something we did a lot was switch off. You know, let me go take an hour and then you can take an hour. Something like that.

ryan_2_01-19-2026_151916

And then my last tip, and this kind of flows throughout all three of these episodes, is the best cruises start with smart planning. So cabin location, itinerary flow, ship style, armard culture, all matter. And a cruise that matches how you like to travel will make this such a better experience. We've had people we've worked with that have made decisions based on the time, the money, the family situation, and it just was not the right fit, and they didn't enjoy that vacation the way the others did. That really took the time to plan it out and think it through.

j_2_01-19-2026_151916

Agree. And sometimes to me that comes up most with when you're looking just at the price. that is one that tends to bite you a little bit.

ryan_2_01-19-2026_151916

And we've talked about this before, price and value are two completely separate things when it comes to planning a trip.

j_2_01-19-2026_151916

Agree.

ryan_2_01-19-2026_151916

okay.

j_2_01-19-2026_151916
