Which Caribbean Island Is Right for You? Aruba, Grand Cayman, Dominica, Jamaica & More
Not all Caribbean islands are created equal — and finding the right one can make or break your vacation. In this episode of All Things Travel, travel advisors Ryan and Julie from Wonder and Beyond Travel break down the best Caribbean islands based on your travel style, so you can stop scrolling Pinterest and start planning.
In this episode, you'll discover:
Best for First-Timers: Aruba — Why this easy, English-speaking island with predictable weather and US pre-clearance is the perfect Caribbean introduction. Plus, why you won't find a great all-inclusive resort there (and why that's actually a good thing).
Best for Families with Young Kids: Grand Cayman — Calm, shallow waters at Seven Mile Beach, Stingray City, the Cayman Turtle Centre, and short airport transfers make this the ultimate stress-free family getaway.
Best for Adventure Seekers: Dominica — The Caribbean's most untouched island offers rainforest hikes, geothermal snorkeling at Champagne Reef, canyoning, whale watching, and dramatic volcanic landscapes. Not for the beach-and-pool crowd — and that's the point.
Best for Foodies: Jamaica — Jerk chicken from roadside grills, Blue Mountain coffee tours, rum tastings, farm-to-table resorts, and some of the most vibrant culinary culture in the Caribbean. Ryan and Julie also share their top resort picks including Half Moon and GoldenEye.
Bonus: Honorable mentions for best beaches, including Turks & Caicos in summer vs. the Dominican Republic in winter — and why Roatan, Honduras might be the Caribbean's most underrated destination.
Ryan and Julie also share an exciting client story: an all-concierge Disney Wish cruise for a multigenerational family, and a sneak peek at next week's episode on Iceland.
Whether you're a nervous first-timer, a parent wrangling toddlers, a thrill-seeker, or a passionate foodie — there's a Caribbean island with your name on it. Tune in and find yours.

ryan_1_02-09-2026_163123Julie, we're gonna talk about the Caribbean today. What was the first trip that you took to the Caribbean?
j_1_02-09-2026_163123Probably honeymoon. To Mexico, which I guess is
ryan_1_02-09-2026_163123Yeah, yeah, yeah. I would de definitely the, the Cancun area, I would put that in the Caribbean
j_1_02-09-2026_163123Yeah,
ryan_1_02-09-2026_163123And what were your first impressions of being in the Caribbean?
j_1_02-09-2026_163123Oh, it was so lovely. It was so warm, sunny, not like it is right now in February.
ryan_1_02-09-2026_163123I think my first trip to the Caribbean was either Mexico or Puerto Rico. I remember that trip and, seeing the beaches and the water and then visiting Old Town. It was such a fascinating trip. as I've visited other islands, kind of seeing the different flavors of the islands are just amazing and we love sending folks to the Caribbean because there's so many options based on what they want to do.
j_1_02-09-2026_163123I guess to me the other word that comes to mind is it just felt like very exotic, right? Like it's so different from what we see every day in our hometowns.
ryan_1_02-09-2026_163123Yeah. Especially, and Maryland are not Caribbean esque.
j_1_02-09-2026_163123Especially in February when we still have snow on the
ryan_1_02-09-2026_163123right. Well, today we're gonna continue our best of series. I've taken different travel focuses and talked about islands you may want to visit based off of that. But before we get into that, I wanna remind folks that they did not listen to last week, we wrapped up our cruising series. For, I, I, I guess new cruisers, but you know, people who haven't cruised in a while too. and that episode specifically was about, debarkation and some overall cruise tips.
j_1_02-09-2026_163123All right, so tell us where we're starting this. Best of Caribbean episode. Ryan, what are we talking about first?
ryan_1_02-09-2026_163123So the first island is best Caribbean island for newbies. people who may not have been to the Caribbean before, maybe they've only been to one place on a cruise, And for this, I chose Aruba. I chose Aruba because it's one of the easiest Caribbean islands to get to, thanks to, a good infrastructure. It also has really predictable weather. It doesn't often get hit with hurricanes, that we see in the fall. it's English speaking population, calm beaches, and it delivers that classic. Caribbean experience without a lot of cultural or logistical friction. So if we're talking about the US from the east coast, like New York City, you're talking about a four, four and a half hour nonstop flight, maybe from Chicago, a five hour flight. easy taxi transfers, the Iowans very, navigatable. And there's also a US pre-clearance. So when you're coming home, you're not having to go through. Customs when you get back.
j_1_02-09-2026_163123think that from a US perspective, a lot of clients view Aruba as being safe. Aruba is known for being an island where you can go and then you can leave your resort and you're encouraged to go out to eat and not eat at the resort. And we'll kind of talk more about that later. But I think that kind of gives it that notion of this is a safe place to go. And that's obviously what somebody who's new to the Caribbean is looking for.
ryan_1_02-09-2026_163123So some places to think about staying when you're in Aruba for adults only, the bu, the TI and Tara Beach Resort, which is ideal for couples or first timers wanting peaceful luxury in one of the best beaches in the Caribbean. We also have the Aruba Marriott Resort and Stelara Casino. There's also one of these in Puerto Rico as well, a large scale resort with multiple dining options. Great for travelers who want everything in one place. And then finally, the Renaissance Aruba Resort Central location near kind of everything as far as shops and nighttime, plus access to a private island for your beach days. So Julie, what are a couple things that we could be doing when we're in Aruba?
j_1_02-09-2026_163123The most popular thing is to relax on Eagle Beach or Palm Beach. These are those beautiful picturesque beaches that you see in the photos. It is also great for snorkeling The waters are fairly gentle, so bring your own snorkeling, gear and go see all the tropical fish there. So we can also visit the Air Cock National Park for some light hiking and views of those dramatic, beautiful landscapes on the island, or do a day trip to De Palm Island, which is like an adventure and waterpark all wrapped in one. They have beach areas and you can see those famous flamingos. This is an excursion I almost always recommend to clients. I do wanna point out, With Aruba Ryan, you'll notice that in our resort recommendations, none of those are all inclusive resorts,
ryan_1_02-09-2026_163123Right?
j_1_02-09-2026_163123which is a question I get a lot for Aruba, What do you tell clients when they ask about all-inclusive in Aruba?
ryan_1_02-09-2026_163123there's really not any all-inclusive resorts that we recommend on the island of Aruba. We'll talk about some all-inclusive resorts with other islands, but Aruba doesn't have those options.
j_1_02-09-2026_163123Yeah, and I think part of it is like They're just not up to the quality of what you think of an all inclusive should be.
ryan_1_02-09-2026_163123Right.
j_1_02-09-2026_163123in Cancun of the Dominican Republic. I like to say that's because the competition isn't there. They don't have to have the highest quality because they're not in competition with other all-inclusive resorts. And it also is that idea of go and explore the island and don't stay at your resort the whole time.
ryan_1_02-09-2026_163123Yeah, so Julie, you work with a lot of families with smaller kids, and this was the second category I have.
j_1_02-09-2026_163123the best Caribbean island for families with small kids, we're gonna pick Grand Cayman it has very calm, shallow beaches. a short transfer time to get there. And there's a lot of activities on the island that can appeal to both kids and adults. So when we think about travel time from Florida, it's about an hour and a half to two hours nonstop, or about three and a half to four hours from the East coast. And then those resorts are only about 10 to 20 minutes from the airport.
ryan_1_02-09-2026_163123So some of the resorts that we recommend when it comes to Grand Cayman is the Kimpton Sea Fire Resort and Spa. Which is a family friendly luxury resort with great pools, beach access, flexible dining. Kimpton always has some really interesting kind of more boutique leaning, options, whether it's hotels or resorts. The Ritz-Carlton Grand Cayman ideal for families who want elevated service and a set menu of activities throughout the day and also the Palm Heights, which is a boutique style, relaxed atmosphere with space for families and also close to a lot of dining options. So speaking of adults and families, Julie, what are some activities we could do on Grand Cayman?
j_1_02-09-2026_163123some activities that your family is going to love on Grand Cayman is heading over to Seven Mile Beach and enjoying the shallow, gentle water that is perfect for your younger ones. And I'm gonna even say to pack your collapsible sand buckets and bring some shovels to keep your little ones entertained. You can also head over to Stingray City, which is a safe, shallow water animal encounter that your kids would love to participate in. can go to the Cayman Turtle Center, which is interactive and educational. And I don't know if you know this about me, but turtles are my favorite animal, so I would absolutely be there. And then Camina Bay, which has shops, dining, and a lot of open spaces for kids to Rome. So this just seems like a very relaxed environment to go visit with your family.
ryan_1_02-09-2026_163123I love it. And to be honest, I have not been to either of these first two Iowa ones, so they need to be on my list. All right, Julie, so I have two more best of Caribbean to talk about, but first I wanna talk about where in the world is wonder and beyond travel. I have the honor of working with a family that just reached out to me a couple weeks ago. this is an epic family cruise. It is two families of four. The grandparents and an adult couple. They're all brothers and sisters and they are all going on the Disney Wish out of Port Canaveral all concierge. they are going to have an amazing trip. We know that Disney Cruise line is wonderful for families. the lead guest, they've been on Disney Cruise Line multiple times, so she knew what she wanted, she knew what they were gonna get out of it, she says, I usually organize the cruises for my family, but I need help with all of these different families. And so I was recommended to her from another Disney, cruise line client they're just gonna have an amazing time.'cause we know not only what Disney Cruise Line does for families, but what Disney Cruise Line Concierge does for families.
j_1_02-09-2026_163123Yeah, it's definitely elevated service and elevated experience.
ryan_1_02-09-2026_163123We love celebrating with our clients where they're headed. It inspires curiosity in both us and them. And we can't wait to hear about their trips when they get back. And if you work with Julie and myself, who knows, maybe we're gonna be discussing your trip. All right, Julie, so we've talked about this island before and we've talked specifically about this type of traveler in this island. The third area of best of in the Caribbean is best for adventure seekers. And for this we're going to Dominica, which is probably the least, developed that we're gonna talk about today. Why is Dominica the pick for this. On the Caribbean's wild side, It's less developed, deeply natural, ideal for travelers who wanna hike, see waterfalls, see volcanic landscapes, and have authentic eco adventure, and really prioritizing that over beach and nightlife that we've been talking about with these first two. getting here is a little harder there's no non-stop flights from any US city except from Puerto Rico. You can also fly through Barbados, Antigua, or St. Lucia. the travel time is a little more here. It's usually over nine hours to get here. Where do we want you to stay? We recommend places like the Intercontinental, Dominica, resort and Spa. It's a luxury base camp with access to nature and recovery, amenities after active days. So that sounds like you're gonna go out and have a lot of fun and then come back and relax at the spa or the pool, right?
j_1_02-09-2026_163123Amazing.
ryan_1_02-09-2026_163123There's Rosalie Bay Eco Resort, perfect for adventure travelers who want emerge and Rainforest and rivers, or the Fort Young Hotel, which has central location with easy access to excursions and local dining. And so speaking of excursions, Julie, what types of things do we look forward to in visiting Dominica?
j_1_02-09-2026_163123This is a really exciting island like you've been talking about. some of the things I love that you can go do is to hike some national trails help me with this pronunciation here. What do we think? to kli National Trail. which is Caribbean's longest trail. And then you can also explore waterfalls like Trafalgar Falls, and head over to the Emerald Pool. Just beautiful, beautiful scenery. would also recommend snorkeling the champagne reef that has geothermal bubbles, which sounds lovely.
ryan_1_02-09-2026_163123I mean, I just want to do that so that I can take a picture for social media that says I'm snorkeling in Champagne Reef. Look at these bubbles.
j_1_02-09-2026_163123That's phenomenal. What a dad joke. You've been holding onto that one for a while. You can also go canyoning River tubing, whale watching, depending on the season. So this is like that kind of island that truly has everything you could look for for adventure.
ryan_1_02-09-2026_163123I think this would be a lot of fun. This is not my normal speed, but I would definitely check it out. So here's what I think I would do, Julie, I would go to Dominica first spend, A good half week, uh, having all of these fun excursions and seeing everything, and then head to another island to chill for a little bit. that's how Ryan would handle this Caribbean style here.
j_1_02-09-2026_163123And I think that we've said that before in a previous podcast where Dominica came up when we were talking about various Caribbean islands, and I wanna say that we linked it with going to St. Kitts and Nevis maybe.
ryan_1_02-09-2026_163123especially'cause you have to fly through somewhere to get there. it just makes it an easy travel kind of bookend, if you will.
j_1_02-09-2026_163123definitely.
ryan_1_02-09-2026_163123All right, so this last category is something we like to talk about a lot. What is that, Julie?
j_1_02-09-2026_163123Best for foodies and Ryan saved the best for last.
ryan_1_02-09-2026_163123Where we headed for some good Caribbean food.
j_1_02-09-2026_163123So Jamaica is the best pick for foodies because the culture is really bold. It's accessible, like, it's not scary cuisine, people are very timid about trying new food. Sometimes it doesn't feel like that. It's also deeply rooted in the local identity of Jamaica, so it's very authentic. You can go from street food all the way to upscale dining. It feels very immersive. The food here has to be amazing. You're thinking all those Caribbean flavors, right?
ryan_1_02-09-2026_163123Yes. Lots of fruit, lots of vegetables, really good grilled meats.
j_1_02-09-2026_163123Grilled meats. also really easy to get to Jamaica, from Florida it's about two hours nonstop. From the East coast, it's about four hours nonstop. And there's two airports, Montego Bay and Kingston that you can fly into depending on where your resort is gonna be. if you're going to one of the other islands that we've talked about today, there might only be like, I know personally like Aruba and Grand Cayman from my airports. maybe one nonstop flight on a Saturday. Jamaica is not like that. There's tons of nonstop lights every day of the week.
ryan_1_02-09-2026_163123Exactly.
j_1_02-09-2026_163123So let's talk about where we should stay. would recommend staying at Half Moon, which is an elegant resort. They offer cooking classes, farm to table dining, and a lot of strong local flavor on site. So if you really do wanna have that foodie trip, this is a great place to be. Golden Eye Resort is a boutique experience. And then we also tend to recommend many of the sandals and beaches properties if you want to go for that all-inclusive feel. Ryan, go ahead and tell us about some of the activities we can do over here.
ryan_1_02-09-2026_163123Well, you've got to sample some authentic jerk, uh, from roadside grills. when Jasmine and I were originally going to do our honeymoon, In Jamaica, I had even looked at what were the jerk stands on the way, between the airport and the resort. we're talking jerk chicken, grilled meats. Just absolutely amazing. And by the way, she would watch me eat that. There's no way that she would eat that.
j_1_02-09-2026_163123I'll come and I'll eat it as well.
ryan_1_02-09-2026_163123So visit local markets and street food stalls. Something I always recommend to get into the food scene tour, the Blue Mountain Coffee plantations, do rum tastings, beachfront seafood dinners, cooking classes, and food tours. I enjoy doing all of this stuff, so Jamaica just sounds amazing to me.
j_1_02-09-2026_163123I agree, and I know that the activities that we specifically mentioned for Jamaica support that being a great foodie destination, but it's a very well-rounded destination because you also have Duns River Falls and so many, of those more adventurous type, the rafting, all sorts of stuff to go and do to round out that experience.
ryan_1_02-09-2026_163123I think with all of these islands we talked about today, you come for this category, but you stay for, all these other things that you experience along the way. So as we wrap up, Julie, what is an honorable mention for this list? What's an island we didn't talk about that you might want to highlight?
j_1_02-09-2026_163123I would want to highlight the best beach.
ryan_1_02-09-2026_163123Okay.
j_1_02-09-2026_163123that is looking for the best beach in the Caribbean for your family, like I'm talking in like my family makeup, like little kids, I'm gonna start it off by saying I think it depends on the time of year. you're going in the summer, you've gotta go to Turks and Caicos because it's away from that Sargassum. You don't have, the threat of the beaches being dirty, like it could be in Mexico or the Dominican, I think if you're going more, November to March-ish, Then you go to the Dominican. What do you think?
ryan_1_02-09-2026_163123So I'm going to say off the beaten path, and it's not really off the beaten path because it's a very good. Chance that you're gonna use this as a cruise port stop. But not many people go there to vacation unless they are scuba divers. And I'm talking about roatan, Honduras. I just, I don't know what it is about this island, but like my Facebook feed, is showing me places to stay, places to buy, places to eat I just really, need to go to this island and experience it because everything I hear about kind of the, yes, it's a cruise port and there's hustle and bustle there, but get away from that and it is just a completely different chill vibe. I'd like to learn to scuba dive at some point, and I think this would be a really good reason to go vacation there. they have some of the best scuba diving in the Caribbean. I think I need to get there.
j_1_02-09-2026_163123All right. Put it on the list.
