"I want to see Paris, Rome, Amsterdam, Barcelona, and Prague in 10 days" is one of the most common calls a travel advisor gets — and one of the fastest ways to turn a dream trip into an exhausting one. This week, Ryan and Julie break down which European countries actually pair well together, and why the right combination matters more than the longest list.
Why Pairing Matters
Not every combination works. Mismatched destinations mean long travel times, rushed days, and a trip that feels like checking boxes instead of experiencing a place. The fix: geographic proximity, at least 2–3 nights per stop, and countries that complement each other in pace and culture.
Four Pairings That Work
- France & UK — Paris and London, connected by a 2.5-hour train, pairing romance and art with history and energy.
- Netherlands & Belgium — Amsterdam and Brussels, a shorter, more underrated combo of canals and world-class art alongside chocolate, waffles, and medieval architecture.
- Spain & Portugal — Barcelona, Madrid, and Lisbon on the Iberian Peninsula, ideal for food and culture lovers with 10 days to spend.
- Italy & Switzerland — A scenic-rail pairing anchored by the Bernina Express through the Alps, ending in Milan's fashion and food scene.
How to Choose Yours
Trip length, travel style, and who's coming with you all shape the right pairing — Ryan and Julie walk through how to match each to your group.
Where in the World?
A group of friends is headed to Alaska next summer for an Inside Passage cruise — including Wonder and Beyond Travel's very first client ever, who booked the whole thing off a referral chain that's since grown to multiple staterooms.

Hello and welcome to All Things Travel. It's finally time to plan that first or tenth trip to Europe. But where to go? What makes sense? Especially for newer travelers, Europe can feel a lot like a checklist of sites rather than an immersive experience. Today, we'll discuss how to plan your European travel in a smart and effective way, especially when you want to see multiple countries
JulieListen in with travel advisors Ryan and Julie. He is your travel professor, teaching you everything you need to know to have a magical vacation, and I'm a Disney-loving Maryland mom of three and a specialist in family travel. And together, we're the co-owners of Wander and Beyond Travel. Whether we're discussing incredible destinations, top vacation tips, or sharing personal stories, it's always all things travel
RyanSo Julie, as a travel advisor, how many times have you gotten a call like, "I wanna go to Europe, and I'm thinking about Paris, Rome, Amsterdam, Barcelona, and maybe Prague, and I think I wanna try to do all that in about 10 days"? Is that a common first conversation?
Julieit is so much more common than you think.
RyanA- and,
Julieyeah.
Ryanway am I trying to disparage folks from planning a European vacation. It's just part of the conversation today is there are pairings that make a lot more sense when it comes to the logistics, and Europe for people becomes a checklist of, "I
JulieMm-hmm.
RyanI wanna see this, I wanna see this." And you can make your European trip really stressful by not making the right choices
JulieYeah, and just recognizing you're not gonna see everything, but if you don't see everything, then you really get the feel for where you are
RyanYes, I totally agree. And so really what we're gonna talk about today is how can these different countries kind of work together to give you an experience rather than a check-off list.
JulieMm-hmm
Ryanthat's what I'm excited to talk about today. But first, if you did not listen to last week's episode, Julie started the discussion about Disney castles around the world by discussing Shanghai and Hong Kong All right, Julie. So why a smart pairing makes sense or, things to think about when it comes to a European trip. Europe in itself is pretty compact from a geography perspective, and there's a lot of advantages as far as the transportation. So countries can share borders, obviously, but then there's also a really good train systems. And once you're over there in the continent, you have really good budget airline options. but not every combination works because there can be long travel times between mismatched destinations that drive up the cost, leaving you exhausted before you even started sightseeing. and people really get into the trap of, "I wanna see everything," and it just leads to rush, rush, rush. and then the last thing before we talk about what makes the most sense is sometimes things that look good on paper or, hint, hint, on AI, don't make sense in reality. that's a, a shameless plug for working with people who plan these trips all the time, but it, it is a reality because AI will tell you, "Yeah, you can see whatever you wanna see," but does it really make sense? So talk to us about what could make a good pairing as we start to develop these types of trips, we'll share some examples later in the show, too.
JulieSo the most important thing that makes a good pairing is geographic proximity. You wanna make sure that between cities or between countries you have short travel times either by train or a plane. So i- i- if you can make this work where you're not traveling the entire day, you can definitely be able to enjoy each destination a little bit more. I know recently I was working on an itinerary for Italy, and they wanted to go all over the country, and it kind of turned into like a two-week itinerary instead of their initial nine to 10 days because I'm like, "This is six hours to get from here to here. You're not gonna be able to do anything else really that day.
RyanYeah
Juliemaking sure we understand how long it takes to get there, and then, you know, the logistics. You get there, you don't just like start going right away. You've gotta go to your hotel, drop off your luggage, get something to eat, get settled. So, just really, like Ryan said, thinking about the reality of the trip. You wanna try to pair things that have a similar culture or maybe a thematic connection, countries that complement each other well in their feel, their pace, their vibe. Then you can have really a more cohesive experience. and you wanna make sure you've got at least two to three nights minimum per destination. If you're anything less than that, you're really just checking off that box instead of experiencing a place. And one way I like to do this is I'll kind of alternate three nights in one, two nights in the next, three nights in one, two nights at the next to give that little extra travel time
RyanSo a couple things to avoid here, is pairing countries that don't make sense. So, you know, wanting to go to Eastern Europe and Portugal in the same trip, unless you really have a two-week vacation, it's not gonna work. Make it two different trips. I know that's hard to think about when you're thinking about taking the time and cost of going to Europe, but focus on the places that make sense together. And, overlooking, visa rules, currency differences, different things like that can really add to that stress. So let's talk about a couple pairings that make sense, and I'll take the first one, Julie. A classic pairing is France and the United Kingdom. You've got two of the world's most iconic capital cities connected by a train that's two and a half hours apart and has no airport hassle. You can literally go in the train station, come out of the next train station, and you are in a completely different part of Europe, either London or Paris. It just, it sounds amazing, doesn't it?
JulieIt does
RyanBut those two cities couldn't feel more different. you've got the romance and art of Paris along with the history and the energy of London. they really kind of pair off of each other because they're so different in that way. So think of it this way, three nights in Paris, you can visit the Louvre, you can visit Versailles, the Latin Quarter, take a Seine River cruise, and then take a first-class train ride to London for three more nights where you're gonna be seeing the Tower of London, a Thames River cruise, London theater scene, having afternoon tea, seeing changing of the guards. I mean, that's one week, and think of all you've accomplished there in just that one week with that perfect pairing of Paris and London
JulieAnother thing to note about this is the airports. Like getting to and from is pretty easy to do from the US, right? I mean, at least for us on the East Coast, it's easy to get over there and easy to get back
Ryanabsolutely. I talk about the Eurostar and the train. You know, trains in Europe is part of the experience. it's a completely way to travel. I mean, we know from the last couple episodes how much I love just in general, the ease and the efficiency is just absolutely amazing. this second pairing, this really excites me, Julie
JulieThis is the Netherlands and Belgium, so basically going to Amsterdam and Brussels, which I know are some of Ryan's favorites, that he's visited on his past travels. This is a slightly shorter, more underrated pairing, but it's really great for travelers who want to experience, like, the charm of Europe, but not those big, intense cities like Paris, London, and Rome. So Amsterdam to Brussels is a quick, easy train connection, and they're also two very different personalities in one trip. Amsterdam is gonna be a very different energy, a lot of canals, cycling, world-class art like Van Gogh, the Anne Frank House, but also really laid back. Whereas when you go to Brussels, you're gonna go see the Grand Palace, which is one of Europe's most stunning squares and a UNESCO World Heritage site, Belgian chocolate and waffles that actually live up to the hype, And you can also do a day trip over to Antwerp for diamonds and medieval architecture. This trip is perfect if you've already done Paris and London and want something fresh, a little bit different. Or for people who just want a more relaxed, off the beaten path feel to their Europe trip
RyanI love that pairing. it's absolutely amazing. the next one I wanna talk about is again, more of a classic one, and this is Spain and Portugal. So we're mixing here in one trip Barcelona, Madrid, and Lisbon. So you've got the Iberian Peninsula, which is one of the most underrated pairings in Europe. And I don't mean underrated because people don't know about it, but it's usually not your first trip or two to Europe, and it really could be.
JulieYeah
Ryanthey share the peninsula, but they have very distinct cultures, cuisines, and personalities. And I, one of the things I like about this discussion is you're picking two places that are geographically close, whether it's London and Paris, whether it's, Barcelona and Lisbon, but you are choosing things that play off of each other. so this is a great three-city option for travelers with a little more time. So let's talk about kind of thinking, like, a 10-day trip. so in Barcelona you've got Gaudi's La Sagrada Família, Park Güell, the Gothic Quarter, Las Rambla, a flamenco show, maybe taking a day trip up to Montserrat. In Madrid, you've got the Royal Palace, the Prado Museum, maybe taking a tapas tour through Latina. in Lisbon you've got the cobblestone, uh, Alfama neighborhood. You've got, secret food walking tours, day trips to Fatima, medieval areas, and again, a train or a very short internal flight connects all of those together. you've got a train ride between Barcelona and Madrid, then you've got a short flight from Madrid to Lisbon. think food and culture lovers, this trip screams to you. Just, this is just an amazing way to see Europe. Travelers who wanna feel like they've really explored a region just rather than passing through it, I think makes a lot of sense
JulieThis one really gets me very excited because I just finished planning my pre-cruise stay in Barcelona, so I can, picture all this in my mind, and then adding on, Portugal just sounds so cool
RyanAll right, so I've got one more pairing to talk about and then some things to consider when kind of mapping out your own trip. But next I wanna talk about where in the world is Wonder and Beyond Travel. And Julie, this is a type of trip that keeps coming up over and over for me, and this is a group of friends that are traveling to Alaska, doing an Alaskan cruise.
JulieAll right
Ryanis a very good friend of the show, and she knows who she is, and she happened to also be, I don't know if she knows this, but she was the first client of Wonder and Beyond Travel. Not this trip, but many, many moons ago, she was our first client of our agency
JulieLucky lady
RyanLucky lady. So her and her husband reached out to me and wanted to do an Alaskan cruise, and then once they actually found what they wanted, and from that then sprang up, I believe, three other staterooms of friends that are going along as well. And this is not the first time I've planned a trip like this, and I absolutely love it because I think an Alaskan cruise is a dream trip for a lot of people. And so as you start talking about it, people wanna join you. This is next summer, just about a year exactly from when we're recording this. They're gonna do a great Inside Passage cruise, so they're seeing all those great highlights that we've talked about on the show before. I can't wait for this group to go and experience Alaska. We love celebrating with our clients and hearing all about their trip, and we can't wait to hear about it when they get back.
JulieI think it's really funny that that's what you highlighted because I am booking the exact same thing as well, a friends group to Alaska on a cruise
Ryanthis next pairing, Julie, is Italy and Switzerland, and think of this as a scenic railways pairing in Europe. So this one's for train lovers and foodies. Do we know anybody that might fit that bill?
JulieI think that's you
Ryanit starts in the Swiss Alps and ends in Milan. So the anchor experience is the Bernina Express, a UNESCO World Heritage scenic train journey from Chur through the Alps, glaciers, mountain passes, viaducts. The views shift dramatically over four hours. You're gonna be stopping in Lugano, which is an Italian-speaking part of Switzerland that has Mediterranean temperatures, lakeside beauty, and has a real mix of Swiss and Italian cultures. You're gonna be seeing Lake Como, so you've got the wine, olive oil tasting. You've got hiking. you've got Bellagio, which is considered one of the most beautiful places in Italy You've got cooking classes in northern Italy, and then you end in Milan. You've got the Duomo Cathedral, The Last Supper, the Fashion District, designer outlet shopping. But trip is perfect for so many people, people who want a romantic trip, foodies, design and fashion lovers. Anyone who wants something, I guess, kind of cinematic and a little un- unexpected is gonna find it in a trip like this
Juliewhen you said Italy and Switzerland, this isn't the w- the way I thought you were gonna go, but I love this option. This can definitely be done in like a week, right? And
RyanYeah
Julieif you extended it a little bit longer, it's easy to add in, Florence or going to, Interlaken and Lucerne in Switzerland. So it's easy to extend this one as well
RyanYeah, I love it. So as we're thinking about choosing the right pairing, there's some logistical things to consider as you start to map this out, and maybe this is something to talk about with your group before you reach out to somebody like me or you, Julie.
JulieHmm
Ryanor those considerations we should have?
JulieOne of the biggest ones is how much time do you have? If you only have seven days, you wanna focus on just that one really strong pairing, like we talked about with Paris and London. You know, going to two places that are close together, easily traveled between. if you have longer, if you have 10 days, 12 days, add a third city or a third country or go deeper into the places that you are staying at. think about, what are you looking for in your trip? Are you more into culture and art? That might lend itself more towards Amsterdam or Paris. If you're more into things that are outdoors, that Switzerland trip is probably piquing your interest. If you're thinking more about food and wine, I would think more about, Spain and Portugal or even up to Italy, in that Lake Como area. And fashion, you're gonna be thinking Paris or Milan, not in the same trip, but in general. And who is going with you? If this is a multi-generational trip, you're likely gonna have different needs throughout your family, so you wanna make sure you find something that really speaks to everyone on the trip, and that's where we come in, right? We help you decide which countries really fit your family best. If you've got a lot of little kids, you're not gonna be wanting to do that 12-day trip, or even if you have much older family members, you don't really wanna be doing that 14-day trip either and very long train rides and so on. so that's just a little plug to work with us, and we can figure all that out for you
RyanAnd I love the idea, Julie, of kind of choosing the why then building around that, not just, well, we know we want to see this city and this city and city, this city. But what is it that you really want to get out of your trip to Europe? And then let's find the right pairing for that.
Julieone of these trips is on my daughter's list, and she talks about it all the time. we have told the kids that when they turn 10 and when they turn 18, they get to pick a trip. my daughter turns 10 in 2028 at the end of the year, so this'll probably be a 2029 trip. But she is set on Disneyland Paris. She saw something about Arendelle, the world of Frozen, and she is set that she wants to go to Disneyland Paris. So we've talked about it and we talked about how, okay, we'll do Disneyland Paris, but we will also go see other sites in Paris, and then also go to London. So, you know, that itinerary that you mentioned is literally what we're looking at for a couple years from now. I also think that's one of the best ways to introduce kids to Europe, is those two pairings
Ryanagreed. I think, that is a great pairing for your first time in Europe. I don't think I can choose between these. These all sound absolutely amazing.
JulieI see you in Spain and Portugal
RyanI, I'm gonna do them all. I've made that decision. I'm doing it all. I'm doing it
JulieIn one trip.
Ryantrip.
Julietrip, you're gonna backpack across Europe and you're gonna live stream it
RyanI'm gonna go completely against our, suggestion today, and I'm gonna do it all in a week
JulieStop.
RyanThe world is full of wonder and your next great adventure is waiting. At Wonder and Beyond Travel, we work with you to create a one-of-a-kind journey, taking the stress off your plate so you can focus on the joy of exploring and the memories that will stay with you forever. JulieIf you're a food and culture level, lover- If you're a food and culture level, if you're a food and culture level, I can't say it
RyanIf you're a very level-headed lover
JulieI can't say it. Okay. Or for people who just want a more relaxed, off the beaten path feel to their Europe trip
Ryanhikes
JulieThat was brutal
